The most beneficial life skill is learning to take good care of oneself, both physically and emotionally. Health problems are increasing in our society, but many of these problems can be prevented through lifestyle decisions, such as diet. Food is the fuel that the human body needs to keep an individual alive and nourishing the body with vitamins and minerals is vital to providing energy, keeping the muscles moving, the heart beating, and the brain active. Although medical treatment and surgical interference can be lifesaving in the time of a heart attack, it does little to prevent future heart attacks. It is essential to get to the root of the problem and make individual changes, especially changing dietary patterns to a diet rich in nutrients and plants have been shown to stop and even reverse coronary artery diseases, when compared with the basic American animal-based diet. According to Mayo Clinic Cardiovascular disease “refers to conditions that involve narrowed or blocked blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack, chest pain (angina) or stroke” (Staff, 2014). Although meat contains nutrients that encourage muscle growth and provide energy, studies have suggested: “those who follow a vegetarian diet typically have lower cholesterol levels and a lower risk for coronary heart disease than non-vegetarians”(Macknin et al., 2015). In another study, patients were given a diet filled with fruits, vegetables, lentils, whole grains, flax seeds and multivitamins, and asked to avoid processed foods, added oils, and sugary foods such as sucrose, fructose, syrups, and molasses. The results revealed that “Of the 22 patients, 17 were adherent to the protocol, and their disease progression halted” (Esselstyn, Gendy, Doyle, Golubic, & Roizen, 2014). Not only will eating healthy foods be cheaper and safer, it can be beneficial in reversing the leading causes of death in Western
This article details the benefits of a primarily vegetarian diet in primary prevention of heart disease.
Health visitors are registered nurses who undergo extra training to work in the community with families and children under five. The main principles of health visiting are to ensure that children have a healthy and positive start to life by recognising health needs, encouraging health enhancing activities and influencing health policies (Craig and Lindsay, 2000). Health visitors provide the Healthy Child Programme (HCP) which allows all families access to services ranging from immunisations through to safeguarding. Although health visitors play a key part in the healthcare of families and children they also work closely with other health professionals in order to help families achieve optimum health. This essay will describe the health visiting role in more depth as well as discuss why immunisations are a key role in the health promotion undertaken by a health visitor.
The documentary, Forks Over Knives, examines the controversial idea that our society’s typical dietary habits are to blame for many of today's most serious health issues. From the video, we learn that diseases which can be caused, or exacerbated by, poor dietary habits include heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and hypertension. The documentary explains that the food we eat on a regular basis does not contain the proper nutrition that our bodies truly need to function at their most optimal and healthful level. Caldwell Esselstyn and Colin Campbell both support the idea that eating a strictly plant-based diet is the most supportive and ideal way to obtain the nutrients necessary to living a life free of disease. In particular, Caldwell Esselstyn asserts that those who are already plagued with disease can reverse the damage and symptoms simply by eating a plant-based diet.

How health is defined differs from person to person, what is healthy and what is not healthy is subjective. Some people say that a healthy person would live the longest or a person is only healthy if he/she is physically very strong and active. Some might even say a person is only healthy if that person is mentally strong. In my opinion, health cannot be defined in one word. Although my seventy-six-year-old grandfather would not be considered stereotypically healthy, he is a perfect example of what I consider healthy because he is mentally physically and emotionally fit and takes care of his body in every aspect.
How can healthcare provided by the government help all people? Over the year’s health care has gone up a significant amount. People cannot afford to pay for it, so many are not covered. Lots of people become sick and stay unable to receive treatment because they are not apart of health care or capable to pay for hospital expenses. The government should take responsibility for the people and take care of health care charges. The president, Barrack Obama came up with an affordable health care insurance called Obamacare. Medical expenses should not be a reason for people to stay unhealthy. Health care should be provided by the government because it can make people become healthier, save money and more life’s can be saved.
As stated in “Understanding Your Health”, “Food Supports growth and development by providing the body with nutrients needed for energy, repair of damaged tissue, growth of new tissue, and regulation of physiological processes.” (Payne, Hahn & Lucas 113). It may sound obvious to say food is responsible for life, but when a person lives a life where food is always accessible, it is far too easy to forget the importance of food. Eating can often become and arbitrary part of living, but what a

Cardiovascular health, including heart disease, is one such aspect positively affected by vegetarian diets. Heart disease is a widespread problem, so extensive that it is the number one cause of death in America. A major cause of heart disease is hardening of the arteries, also called atherosclerosis. This occurs when plaque from high fat or high cholesterol diets builds up on the inside of arteries causing increased strain on the heart, and blood clots if the plaque breaks from the artery wall. Atherosclerosis is also the most common cause of heart attacks. Vegetarian diets have shown to be effective at preventing heart problems, because they tend to be lower in fat and cholesterol, leading to less buildup on the artery walls. “Cardiovascular risk (CVR) is significantly decreased among vegetarians because of a diet high in ...

Some studies have established that BMI rather than diet aided in the high blood pressures, a leading cause of heart diseases. Hence, dietary interventions together with exercise aids in weight management leading to reduced BMIs (Rajaram & Sabaté, 2000). Consequently, low BMIs may lead to reduced blood pressures thus, reduced the risk for CVDs. Also, there is increased the risk of Ischemic heart diseases in omnivores than in vegetarians and vegans. This increased risks is because of the high BMIs and poor lifestyle habits such as smoking, intake of alcohol and poor dietary practices. Davis & Kris-Etherton (2003) elaborate further that differences in blood lipid levels also explains the increased risks of heart diseases among

Weight control is a concern of most individuals, and as a person ages weight becomes more difficult to manage.
