Gun Control Not Enough America is a country obsessed with guns. Firearms have been deeply engrained in American culture since its establishment. Guns were used as a means to hunt animals for food and fur and provide protection from predators and natives. Throughout time guns have become more popular and were used for entertainment purposes like recreational hunting and gun shows. Nowadays, guns are as popular as ever, they give the feeling of power and pride to their owners. Guns are being used contrary to what their original purpose was. Gun violence is an epidemic in this country. Every year over 30,000 people are murdered, and over 75,000 are injured as a result of the availability of guns in this country. Every year 45 people are shot unintentionally. There have been hundreds of cases where children find their parents firearms in an unlocked drawers and shoot themselves. These guns are meant to save lives but ironically have the opposite effect. In one case, grandparents were babysitting their grandson and had put him down for a nap. They later heard a gunshot and found the boy had shot himself. "When they went in to check on him, he had apparently located a .380 semi automatic pistol that was in the bedroom and had apparently accidentally shot himself in the head”. Because the number of these cases are so low, legislative bills do not gain traction before congress and appears to be less important. It was the deadliest shooting in grade school history, right here in our own state. That same year, James Holmes went to midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises”, set off smoke bombs, then used multiple guns to kill 12 people and injure 70. These were gruesome crimes shocked the whole entire world. Recent mass shootings like these have sparked more debate on gun control. A report from MSNBC news network stated that 82% of firearms used mass shootings over the last three decades were legal. Some laws have been put in place like the ban on sale of semi-automatic weapons and universal background checks. These laws help, but are still not effective enough. Current laws in place are not enough because people are still able to get his hands on a weapon if they want. The gun owners, Holmes and Lanza’s mother, had clean records before this. Gun lobbyists chose to leave guns out of the conversation and focus the blame on mental health. Regardless of these mass-shooters’ mental state, they were still able to obtain enough weapons to murder and injure groups of people. The only way gun control laws can be effective is if they are banned
