Recommended: Defined freedom
Freedom is the absence of subjection or foreign domination or despotic government. The United States of America is imposing on this statement above. The United States is going to close all the borders to all immigrants. The government is thinking about closing the borders to helpless Muslim men woman and children, turn them away and say that they are not our problem. Is that right? Is that what American the Free was created on? The United States has Freedom of Religion, with this new idea the United States is imposing on this law. The borders should stay open. The reasons why are as follows: It goes against the very constitution, most immigrants are not dangerous, if we close we might lose friends and allies and be attacked. It goes against
God has given us as human beings free will. Although if we make choices based on our own free will we must be willing to take the responsibility for the effects that our decisions have on ourselves, on the people around us, and on society itself. Freedom, I believe, is the way in which people live or behave without others annoying or interfering in his or her affairs. People should benefit from freedom, equality and justice. Absolute freedom is sometimes very dangerous and may destroy the basic principles of the society. A lot of people believe that freedom means doing whatever you want, whenever you want.
“To His Excellency General Washington,” by Phillis Wheatley, is a poem about America’s destiny for freedom and its resolution to fight for liberty. Wheatley addresses this poem to General George Washington during the American Revolutionary War. Throughout the poem, Wheatley depicts America as a self-reliant, heaven-favored nation. For example, a divine goddess leads the country in a fight for peace and liberty. The poem correlates America’s army to that of the powerful Greek wind god, Eolus. Wheatley instructs Washington to continue forward, to “Proceed” in the cause for independence (Line 39). She announces that even other countries watch, eager to see America succeed in its quest for liberty. Phillis Wheatley conveys America as an exemplary, independent country that deserves freedom through the use of personification, symbolism, similes, and diction.
Freedom is something that is not taken lightly in our country. With so many people in America, and so many different religions and views, there will never be a way to make every single person happy. People have the right to believe what they choose, say what they want to say, and do what they want to do. They have the right to worship and take part in ceremonies they choose. It is not for the government to tell them how to live their life. There may be restrictions on certain things but they do not require you to believe a specific way. America is a privileged nation and a free country and the people have every right to be thankful for all the freedoms we have been given.
George Washington once said, “Only virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become more corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.” England took advantage of its colonies and tried to enforce unfair policies. In 1775, the political mistreatment needed to end and the United States needed to separate from Britain to develop successfully as a country. The American Revolution changed the history of the world. To understand it’s the importance of the American Revolution it necessary to understand pre-war America, the cause of war, Britain’s mindset, United States’ mindset, the economy, significant events, and how the war ended.
The most common phrase in America today is “Home of the Free”. When America first started out in the Colonies the above quote was probably very true. As time has passed through the centuries, America has felt the need to regulate and reduce the freedom that our founding fathers had intentionally planned for us. Such things as religion, reproductive rights, Native Americans and their rights, and marriage rights are being marginalized. These rights could be considered private matters that the government shouldn’t get involved with and probably rightly so.
According to Eric Foner, “The boundaries of freedom that determine who is entitled to enjoy freedom and who is not…have changed over time.” Throughout America’s history, different groups have settled and inhabited the land. Each group arrived with their own concepts and beliefs regarding freedom. Freedom is defined as being free from control or constraints. Over time, however, this definition would change to fit the customs and beliefs of one group over another. Changes in freedom had occurred numerous times in American history for a number of people, whether it be in the form of national freedom, individual freedom, or religious freedom.
What is freedom of religion? Today people speak freely about their own views over specific topics regarding what they believe and what they think is the truth. Along with everything in life there are limits and laws that the government of the United States has established. Let’s take a look at the definition of freedom, what the government says about our freedom, how it is acted out and portrayed in America, and a few case studies regarding freedom of religion.
Throughout history freedom has had many different meanings and definitions; based on race, gender, and ethnicity. According to the dictionary freedom means the state of being free or at liberty rather than in confinement or under physical restraint (“freedom” def. 1). Freedom may seem like something given to everyone however it was something workers had to fight for. Not everyone believed that workers’ rights needed to be changed, which led to a long battle between workers, employers and the government. To the working class people freedom meant making higher wages, having regulated hours, workable conditions and the right to free speech.
Freedom is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. In America there is numerous of choices that someone may make on a daily basis. If someone were allowed to make their own choices and were being told what to do; then they would not be free. When someone is allowed to speak when they want to, and say what they want; such as their opinion or view of something. Being allowed to have a right to speak is one of the most important characteristics of being an American. Thinking and stating your opinion in any predicament it a strong part in being a citizen because people in the United States are known for being able to think in their own ways. Freedom can stretch too many things such as being able to do as they please, they are not forced into doing anything that someone may want. The citizens of the United States are not made to do anything that one may not want to do; like
Ronald Regan once stated, “Man is not free unless government is limited.” We live in a country where the expression, “freedom,” is relentlessly used. The first amendment of the United States constitution protects our freedom of expression from government interference, which is exactly what we are currently up against. Unfortunately, like many other things in this country, freedom is becoming a questionable illusion. With the development of digital technologies, the government’s scope has become much wider, intruding every possible aspect of our lives. Many Americans are fully aware that they are being recorded in public places for the intention to protect against, and eliminate crime. Take for example, cameras to record our vehicle movements to ensure that we are driving at a reasonable speed, in compliance with the New York State Law. That appears completely harmless and beneficial to our own well-being. Now, imagine sitting at your computer unknowing to the fact that the FBI has turned on and is observing you through your webcam. The National Security Agency has a specialized tool, better known as GUMFISH that indeed, has access to taking photos
Freedom can be viewed in a negative or positive light. For Locke, freedom is a good and natural characteristic of people that is defined through labor. He classifies it into two categories: natural liberty and social liberty. Natural liberty is a key component of society that designates rights to people that the commonwealth cannot take away and that everyone is subject to. In a state of nature, natural liberties give citizens the right to cause harm to another if their own preservation is in harm’s way. Whereas social liberty is a governing agreement established by consent between the commonwealth and the people that protects citizens from others inflicting unjust harm on another.
In America we have 3 essential elements of our political culture: Liberty, equality, and democracy. Everyone has the right to freedom, as long as that freedom does not interfere with other citizens individual rights. You can’t have true liberty without equality, “with liberty and justice for all”. Equality means everyone the opportunity of liberty. America is a democracy, meaning citizens have the right and responsibility to vote officials into office. The concepts of liberty and equality often come into conflict in American politics. Some recent conflicts have included arguments over women’s reproductive rights.
The United States constitution grants many freedoms with minimal to no restrictions, which can be considered beneficial to the public. In “we are free to be you, me, stupid, and dead” by Roger Rosenblatt, he relays the disadvantages of limitless freedom. He focuses mainly on freedom of speech and the possible drawbacks to having ungoverned freedom of expression.
The idea of “freedom for all” is a big theme for the citizens of the United States. With the intention to give people the ability to live their life as they please and minimal interference by others. In return for freedom, people must continue to follow societies laws. Once someone breaks these laws, they may be placed in the prison system and expected to do their time incarcerated. Their time in prison is meant to be a time when they are being rehabilitated and then ready to properly function in society. This total institution leads to the re-socialize inmates by rebuilding their personalities using reward and punishment. Unfortunately, a growing number of the inmate who are released back into society have a difficult time adjusting to life outside of prison. It’s especially difficult for inmates who
In his book, The Future of Freedom, Fareed Zakaria writes that we must make democracy safe for the world. The American democracy sets the standard around the world for liberal democracies, but transitions across for other countries across the world toward a liberal democracy is often difficult and with poor decision making, close to impossible. Liberal democracies are the systems in which people choose their government and live in an environment of freedom. In Zakaria’s book, he warns the readers of several telltale signs that their process toward a liberal democracy is in trouble. He uses examples of different countries doing it right and doing it wrong- the ones discussed in this essay will be Russia and China.
