People see freedom as what they are born with. Freedom is what allows people to do whatever they want without being judged for their appearance, religion, gender, or sexuality.
However, the freedom we have had, has been limited to what we can truly have today. According to the United Nations’ Declaration of Human Rights, everyone has the right to equality and inalienable rights, but there have been some circumstances that these human rights have been ignored. With the little freedom they have, they are not entitled to the things they have earned and worked hard for, everything can be taken away in a heartbeat. In the movie A Better Life, Carlos, the father, is an illegal immigrant from Mexico. He has been living in the United States for more than fourteen years, his own son, Luis, was born here. He illegally stepped foot into the United States because “this country is a land of dreams. It can be a hard place, a cruel place. But it is where [he] works, and [he] dreams a better place for [his] son” (A Better Life). He only wanted to move to the United States so that his son can have a better life than him. Since Carlos was an illegal immigrant, they barely had any freedom and it affected the way Luis behaved and it shaped his identity. Luis began to rebel because he was not getting the father figure he wanted from Carlos. Carlos always had to stay home and stay low because he was afraid of getting caught, but then his worst nightmare came true. He got pulled over and did not have the right credentials and the police found out that he was an illegal immigrant. He was getting deported and there was nothing he could do to stay with his son, Luis had to stay with his aunt and wait until his father was able to come back. According to Article 13 in the Declaration of Human Rights, “everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state” (United Nations Declaration of Human Rights). This article does not fully relate to illegal immigration, but it does state that anyone has the right to become a residence in a state. Since everyone has the right to residence, Carlos would have been able to stay in the United States and still provide for his son.
