For years now, football has been one of America’s favorite sports. It allows players to show their toughness, and their ability to get back up when knocked down; it has also given parents a way to get their children outside and exercise. In today’s society, many parents think nothing about it and are seemingly oblivious to the risk they are taking every time their children suit up for a game. The risk lies in both the age at which children start playing, and the sheer physicality that comes with playing tackle football; many children starting the sport at an age as young as five years old. To start, even though football has a number of serious risks that many people believe children should not be taking, football offers lessons that children may otherwise never learn. They learn how to improve their bodies. Football is a very physically demanding game, but it gives players an opportunity to improve their strength, speed, agility, hand-eye coordination and overall endurance. Friendship is also a lesson to be learned through football. The friendship among football players on the same team is unlike that of any other sport. With everyone on the same team working toward the same goal, many children develop an unbreakable bond with each other that can last a lifetime. Physical toughness is another lesson football teaches its youngest players. Football is one of the most physical sports played today. The risk of injury is higher than any other sport, but players learn to fight through pain and give their best effort despite what limitations may be present. Finally, as well as being a physical sport, football is a mental sport. Whether it is getting through a minor injury or getting past a mistake, children who play football often develop a mental toughness they may have never discovered if it had not been for the game. Children’s bodies are just not able to take the wear and tear that an adult body can. By the time a kid is four years old, their heads are around 90% of adult size, but their necks do not even compare to the strength of one of an adult. This can be a very dangerous situation if a child were to take a serious hit to the head. A serious hit to the head of a child can cause all sorts of injuries. Concussions are one of the most common injuries found in football, but there is also the possibility of injury to other parts of the body. Whether it is a broken bone, or the tear of a muscle or a tendon; children should not be exposed to risks that can set them back physically at such a young age where they are still
