In most stories, the reason everything always goes well for the protagonist is because fate was written that way. From the beginning of the story, it was foretold that a specific event would end in the protagonist’s favor. In the book, Re: Zero – Starting Life in Another World by Tappei Nagatsuki, the main character, Subaru Natsuki, was just an average everyday high school student in Japan. Subaru’s average life came to end once he was thrown into a parallel world from his own by a power unbeknownst to him. Along with this new world, Subaru also finds himself with the power to travel back in time to before his life was in danger. However, there’s a catch. Subaru has to be killed in order for his power to take effect, “Return by Death” as it is referred to by Subaru. Throughout the book, Subaru exploits this ability to save his friends and of course his own life. In Subaru’s first life, fate sets the stage for Subaru showing him what he must look out for and where fate will test him. In Subaru’s second life, he changes the outcome of his mugging and learns manages to change the time of his death and who he is with learning more information about the scenario. Subaru’s third life allows him to recognize his ability “Return by Death”. In Subaru’s fourth and final life, he successfully manages to change fate and avoid its consequences by saving his new friends in the fight in the loot cellar and stopping murderer herself.
