The presence of family is necessary for a civilization to flourish. I am blessed to come from a family of diligent, loving, and supportive people. I have gone through countless problems throughout my life that I couldn’t have been able to go through without the support from my family. They have been amazing helping me every step of the way through thick and thin. A family is important because we feel safe and where we trust that we have someone always there to whom we could turn to when we need them the most. My family’s most extrusive influence is when they support me and no matter what they are always open to talk with me. When I am at my lowest point, I can always look towards my family. They listen to me and try to understand my viewpoint, always open to discuss things with me. In “Mother’s Tongue,” by Amy Tan, she describes her mother’s “broken English” that limited her interactions and abilities in life which was looked down upon by the society. Thus, leading to Tan wanting to achieve greatness. Inspired by her Mother, Tan went against the average image of an Asian and became an English writer. This relates to my family because their main form of communication is Vietnamese and in public, they struggle to speak with others. “Stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her” (Tan 416). Society looked down on my family, but that didn’t stop them from surviving. Despite their lack of communication, they were still able to strive in the society. Their struggles helped shape my life. The family provides various tools that help achieve success in life. Our family supports us in creating our strong future by giving us a valuable suggestion about different career prospective. Parents have to guide their children but should leave them to make their own decision. At a young age, it is likely to be impressionable, but later on, experiences can affect your choices. Not only does the family guide us in choosing the best but also financially helps us to cover the expenses of education. The way our parents raise us is the person we are going to become. In “On Being a Cripple,” by Nancy Mairs, I feel that Mair’s disease, multiple sclerosis, had benefitted her family in a way that provided them with skills that they can use in the future. Such as knowing how to help a person with their disability issues. “To select my clothing with care not so much for style as for ease of ingress and egress, and even so, dressing can be laborious” (Mairs 301). One of the skills learned is how to dress a disabled person. My sister has been one of the key figures during my life. She has pushed me to strive for greatness. She was my role model.
