Memory is not just a psychological aspect of our brain that allows us to remember events and ideas. It is our ability to store information from the past. Memory gives us the ability to use this stored information to affect the present and conceivably the future. Through memory; individuals have the capacity to remember various subjects over a lifetime. The issue with memory is its fallibility, meaning that it can lack accuracy, so certain experiences from the past can be distorted. Things change as you remember them, change as you think about them, and change as others make you think about them. False memories range from thinking you saw your cell phone in the living room when it was in the kitchen; to falsely thinking that you were sexually abused. Memory is not a video that accurately documents every instance in your life. Individuals can think that their memory is accurate however research shows that memory is subjective to inaccuracy and inconsistencies. Studies were completed on false memory to demonstrate that false memory does exist, and people are vulnerable to it. False memories happen more often than individuals realize. As time goes on, false memories can become stronger and more vivid. With that being said; the new memories or experiences could change old memories. False memories can be caused by many factors such as time, age, but mainly due to misinformation and misattribution or source monitoring. Episodic memory, another component of explicit long-term memory, is comprised of remembering specific events such as what you did at school yesterday, what you ate for dinner the previous day, or remembering your college graduation. Our recollection of our experience that encompasses emotions, context, a time and place. Imagine having a memory of a very traumatic event resurface in your mind after forgetting about it for twenty years. That is what happened to Eileen Franklin in 1989 when she had recovered what is called a repressed memory of her father, George Franklin, killing her friend in 1969, which eventually lead to her father getting a sentence of life in prison (Beaver, 1996). A repressed memory is a memory that is not forgotten, but is a memory of something traumatic that is blocked and not recovered unless triggered by something. Although her descriptions of the event were very vivid, describing colors and sounds, most of what she described could be proven inaccurate. Some of what she described was information that was misreported in newspapers that she had probably read or been told about in the past. This is an example of the misinformation effect. Misinformation effect is when someone is misled by information about an event that they witnessed and has an effect on how they remember that event later. This is just one example of how the misinformation effect can change how an event is described.

A leading researcher at the University of Washington, Elizabeth Loftus, is specialized in the area of memory. She has recently discovered that when an occurrence is recalled it is not always re-created accurately. Loftus’ research revealed that instead, it is a reconstruction of the actual event. Newly collected information in relation to the topic being re-called can interfere with the memory you’re attempting to recall resulting in inaccurate recollection of the experience. If not be newly collected information it could be from other sources, such as the previous times you’ve told it, experiences from a television episode, a movie, or many other factors. You may have even experienced this yourself when you’ve been in the same place with another person for an event but have two un-matching stories of how the story took place and what occurred.

There have been several experiments done to try to prove that false memories can indeed be formed. One experiment, for example, was tried with a 14-year-old boy. The boy was told four memories, one of which was falsely constructed but similar to that of a true memory. The memories that were suggested took place when the boy was about 10 years younger. As the false memory was retold to him, he was asked to explain in detail what he had remembered from that event. Surprisingly, he claimed to remember the event, even though it was falsely created by the interviewer and his brother, and went on to explain what he remember to have happened, details and all. After collecting everything he had said about the four memories, he was told that one of the suggested memories was made-up and he was asked to guess which one it may have been. When he couldn’t decide which one it was, he was told that it was in fact the memory of getting lost in a store. He was confused and had trouble believing the truth.

The article How to Tell If a Particular Memory Is True or False by Daniel M. Bernstein and Elizabeth F. Loftus, addresses the various techniques used by cognitive scientists and other researchers in hopes of distinguishing true from false memories. For this article Loftus and Bernstein, memory researchers, chose to discuss the different methods currently used, rather than trying to find new ways to tell if a particular memory is true or false. Their findings in these three different approaches are very interesting, and leads us to think critically of the veracity of true and false memories.
