The dispute over the environmental issues has always been of great interest for people. Nowadays, when the matter of natural resources depletion becomes one of the most relevant challenges the humanity is facing, there is a need for joint efforts to establish an efficient environmental policy.
This paper will be discussing the current environmental issues and policies to reduce the negative environmental impact of people’s activities. Since the role of the corporation in damaging nature is unambiguous, we will also take a look at how do large companies may contribute to the process of nature protection and what role can a corporate environmental policy play for reduction on negative consequences of anthropogene impact on the environment. For

These issues for the most part incorporate waste managements, water and air pollution, natural security, protection of depleting natural resources. A well-designed environmental policy might prevent environmental damage resulting from human activities and, at the same time, ensure that the ongoing deterioration of environment is not affecting people detrimentally (Van Marrewijk, 2003). Today, the role of corporations operating in the industry of production is recognized as crucial and it has become essential to come to a synergy between governmental environmental policy and corporate environmental policy (Gouldson, 2015). So that, apart from governmental regulations, companies develop the responsibility for its business and those damage that results from its business operations. To fight the damages of the environment pollution and depletion of natural resources the government should encourage the participation of companies, especially involved in production …show more content…
It conducts several policies toward nature protection. The first of those policies is a so-called paper sourcing policy. It implies that the company is using the materials for its productions which can be completely recycled. More that 80% of company’s packages are made of paper that can be either recycled or produced from manageable forest. Moreover, the company ambitiously aims to increase this share to 100% within the next 3 years (Unilever, 2017). The company is also cooperating with other companies to find the way to recycle other types of packaging, for example toothpaste tubes. The preliminary idea is to recycle and use them in furniture manufactory. Sustainable packaging helps the company to minimize its negative impact from production and, also, brings benefits to its business. By being environmentally friendly company, the Unilever creates a positive image that attracts more customers. Another positive contribution that the Unilever is trying to make to the environmental sustainability is promoting of managing (certified) forests (Van Marrewijk, 2003).
Apart from the paper sourcing policy is that the company is an active member of sustainable water integrated catchment management program. In a partnership with international non-governmental organizations, the Unilever is working on making
Business today has so many responsibilities. Aside from making a profit, they are forced to take on a different responsibility, one that involves the environment. Even though, they already have many regulations set by the government, they are still being asked to answer to the call of helping out the rest of society take of nature. This essay will discuss the pros and cons of corporate responsibility for the environment through the agent-of-society and agent-of-capital views.
Jared Diamond, in his essay “Will Big Business Save the Earth?”, argues that even though multi-billion dollar corporations generate massive amounts of waste, they are also capable of being forerunners in support of environmentalism. Without a doubt, Diamond makes it very clear to the reader that, originally, he was of the opinion that big corporations were incapable of minimizing their impact on the environment, due to their purely financial drive to accumulate revenue for their investors. But when he became a board member of environmentalist outfits like the World Wildlife Fund and Conservation International, he was given the task to assess the environmental impact of various companies across differing economic sectors. While there were indeed some that made a huge negative impact on the environment, in his research, Diamond noticed that were a sizeable number of companies that excelled greatly in being more cautious in how they affect the environment. Of these companies, he takes note of
The problem with pollution prevention is that it requires people to understand more than the intimate details of the production process; they must also understand the technical possibilities. Many corporations have environmental managers, which are generally responsible for helping corporations comply with the law. According to the case study, the work of environmental managers often expose them to many pollution prevention solutions, but they often have trouble getting access to production areas. Production often sees Environmental Managers as "the compliance police".
Typically in the business cycle, companies have a tendency to become the most concerned with the sales sector of their industry. These companies look passed the environmental detriment of society for the chance at obtaining an additional dollar. “When money becomes a measure—as well as the means—of all things, the potential for economic and political mischief grows” (Chouin...
The next part of Audit process is to understand the business environmental aspects of the company. As part of the marketing audit project the author is going to analyze and provide detailed information on the following key environmental aspects
Environmental protection and preservation is a new pressure point that authorities and consumers are using to encourage manufacturers to adopt green production. In this case, as the operations manager of a large automobile company, the CEO has requested a meeting to discuss climate change and the implications for the enterprise. For the meeting to be fruitful, it is imperative that I prepare a briefing paper to address climate change and relate it to the company 's operations. Second, I need to furnish the CEO with possible alternatives in the fight against climate change. Therefore, the possible routes to green production, their ethical impacts, and the question of global warming and climate change from a manufacturing perspective are discussed.
How do you feel when you drive by some sort of factory or plant and you see an obnoxiously large smoke stack spewing fumes into the air or a drainage pipe of chemical runoff that flows into a water supply? The sense of disgust from the thought of how these companies get away with this action not only concur with opinion of environment activists but also involves the United States government. It was not long ago that the government realized that these effects were harmful to the world around us, which caused the government to create several groups to enforce laws and regulations against these unethical operating businesses. These questions are similar to those frequently asked by many economists when discussing the subject of business environmental laws and ethics. A business must decide how they want to run their business, unethically by cutting corners or abiding by ethical and law standards. This issue comes down to the standpoint wherever businesses may fall on if they care more about using unethical ways to gain some sort of advantage or if they would rather operate in a way with limits but complies with ethical and law standards. Important companies like Shell, DuPont, BP has been reorganised to generate profits from this green market of goods and services. In this sense, it may sound altruistic, "the sustainability", the logic of profitability and competition is what will determine the ability of companies of the future to meet the changing needs of consumers.
The manner by which the environment is being harmed is much different now than it was in the 1400's. Production byproducts rather than the actual production are the cause of current environmental degradation. However, economic analysis has proven that environmental protection is a normal good. A normal good or service in economic terms means that the demand for such items increases as income increases. As such, for the sake of the poor as well as the environment, policy makers with the aim of environmental protection should also consider their effects on the resulting, generally decreased level of production.
Jeff Butcher and Rachel Hill pointed out the impacts of businesses on environments, by stating “The more of a product that is consumed or produced, the more of an externality that results” (Butcher, Jeff, & Hill, Rachel, 2006). Obviously, we can see that one product produced will bring benefit to consumer, sellers, and manufacturers. Meanwhile, one produced and consumed will cause negative externalities for environment. There is one fact we cannot deny that the more social life develops, the more externalities will be produced to the society. Daily living garbage, industrial wastes, carbon dioxide from factories are most outstanding examples to describe negative externalities to environment (Butcher, Jeff, & Hill, Rachel, 2006). In “The tragedy of the Commons”, Hardin showed us causes of negative externalities. He proved that people assume a...
Because of this the government has been put into a major predicament. They have, and must continue to create laws, to protect the environment. However they cannot simply place unrealistic restrictions and limitations onto the major polluters; that are the manufacturing companies. These manufacturers emit large quantities of waste and greenhouse gases. However that is the cost of today’s society. The world needs certain commodities to function properly; like paper products, gasoline, oil and other petroleum by-products, as well as many other products that; whether we like it or not, are harmful to the environment, to make and use.
The world today is vastly different from what it was before urbanisation and industrialisation had taken its toll on the world. Since the turn of the new millennium the issue of the environment has suddenly evolved into a widespread issue which is greatly discussed throughout the world. No longer are humans living in a world where the environment is serene or stable but much rather becoming unrecognisable and diminishing before our eyes. The plants, trees and flowers are life forms which God has created for us to enjoy its beauty but it is now solely up to us and many other organisations to protect preserve and respect how fragile our environment really is.
Political and economic perspectives often conflict with one another when dealing with environmental sustainability. In, Laudato si’, Pope Francis I writes, “While some are concerned only with financial gain, and others with holding on to or increasing their power, what we are left with are conflicts or spurious agreements where the last thing either party is concerned about is caring for the environment and protecting those who are most vulnerable” (Pope Francis I, Laudato si’, Sec. 198). Conflicting perspectives between economics and politics may never be settled. The economic perspective is one of profit maximization, if companies can cut costs using non-environmental methods, then they most likely will use these methods. However, Pope Francis I believes we have a moral obligation to encourage new production practices that would sustain natural resources (Pope Francis I, Laudato si’, Sec. 191). In addition to this, a move towards a more sustainable operation would not spell trouble for businesses, since there is profit to be made within sustainable technologies. For example, the current auto industry is shifting its focus towards producing electric powered vehicles, because they foresee the global market for this technology becoming profitable in the near future. Since we are beginning to revamp the economy, to
The environment today is not in a good condition, Climate change is evident, and oceans are getting polluted. Rainforrest's are decreasing in size due to deforestation and illegal logging. Animals are getting extinct due to the destruction of their habitats. Natural resources are being consumed at very large amounts, and get wasted. There are different ways these problems can be addressed, one option is environmental management. Environmental management focuses on conservation of natural resources, protection of habitats, and impact of humans on the environment. Conservation of natural resources is the smart use of the world's resources by humans, through this waste production is limited, and there will be less garbage in the world. By conserving
Is it right that future generations, who have committed no crimes, be forced to live in a contaminated environment with freshwater depletion, polluted air, global warming and biodiversity reduction just because our present generation has caused the damage? Should our future children be ensured an ecologically healthy environment? I think they should. I strongly believe that protecting the environment is extremely important. We are all part of the environment; Earth is what we all share in common. It is our home and we are obliged to preserve it. As someone who is aware, who cares and who is concerned, I’d like to help you understand why protecting our environment is vital. I believe that protecting the environment is essential for healthy living, in creating a healthful environment for our future generation and last but not least, the Earth is our one and only home.
