Education, education, education. The irrevocable, all sales are final, essential foundation to success. Education = success = happiness. This simple formula is established by the reliable sources that have been placed on their pedestal for their experience and knowledge. However, as the pathways for the traditional education model rapidly change beneath the feet of the world, varying opinions have drawn and quartered students, leaving them to fend for themselves. As a college student trying to figure it all out for herself, I have drawn upon societal analyses from the 20th century and the 21st century to present contradicting methods and influences. “Four Steps to Choosing a College Major” written by Nathan Gebhard emphasizes the chaotic noise coming from parents, teachers, and media “suggesting you should be a lawyer, policy makers defining ‘success’ in terms of paychecks, even the voice inside your head saying you’re not smart enough” (Gebhard). Society has created a contradiction that poses the question of education’s true purpose: practicality versus interest.

Gebhard said that this idea transfers over to a student’s passion, believing passion is discovered over time. “Surrender to the process, rather than the goal” (Gebhard). Methods pertaining to education are in the process of taking a complete 180 degree turn, but the value is not determined by a board or some other official with an official title. “Don’t teach students what to think; teach them how to think,” said Lukianoff and Haidt. What a student’s education means is up to the student. There is no right and wrong way to approach education, so let them choose.
