As I ponder life, I realize that change is inevitable. I can think back to one year ago, September 11, 2014. I was entering my Junior year at ULM, with only four semesters to graduate. At that point I had only been married for about two months. As I juggled work, school, and marriage, I am almost positive I was not giving any one of them the time they deserved to be successful. Many things from one year ago are the same, such as: I was a Christian, and I am still firm in my beliefs. I enjoyed exercising, and I still enjoy it today. I cared about success in my classes and life, and I continue to aim for success in both areas today. There are some notable differences that I can think of as well. My wife and I have a blog we started in March of …show more content…
I remember the hall I walked down as I entered my Junior year in high school. I was a Claiborne Christian Crusader. The changes over the past five years outnumber those within the past year. I can think of a few differences in my life within the past five years, such as: My view of diversity has widened because of college. When you have so many students from different walks of life and everyone is on campus for the same goal, you learn not to stereotype and judge people as much. I was probably more arrogant and thought the world revolved around me in high school. I was definitely more stubborn five years ago. I also had not met my wife at that time Many things in my life have remained constant though, first and foremost being my faith. I would hope I have become more mature and knowledgeable over five years as it pertains to my faith, but my commitment to it has not changed. I played sports in high school, and although I do not play sports on a formal team anymore, I still play for recreation. I remember desiring to be different in high school. I was not satisfied with doing things how everyone else did them or how our culture said to do things. I still strive to think outside the box today and try to be
What has been your experience and major contribution(s) in improving race relations with groups other than your own within your school or community and why is diversity and inclusion important to you?
Dental professionals have a commitment to respect diversity and create equity of access to dental care for everyone (GDC, 2014). Diversity describes any dimension that can be used to differentiate an individual from others. It requires understanding that each individual is unique and accepting and respecting these individual differences (QCC,2013). These differences could be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender, age, socio-economic status or other ideologies (QCC, 2013). Understanding the impact that these differences may pose is vital in dealing professionally with people from diverse backgrounds and delivering equal treatment for all. Equality refers to identical treatment in dealings quantitates and values (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Thus, creating equality for all might not mean that there are no disparities between different groups. Equity on the other hand refers to fairness and the equality of outcomes and involves recognizing aspects of a system that may disadvantage a certain group and correcting them (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Therefore, in order to overcome potential pitfalls that may create inequity to access, there is a need to explore the different factors encountered in our diverse society that may create these issues. As an example, patients from different ethnic backgrounds may be faced with barriers accounting for the less frequent use of dental care (CQC. 2010). This group will be used as an example and some of the issues behind this inequity of access will be looked at further.
Whirlpool is a well-known and respected company. It sells its products worldwide and has a large customer base with a variety of people each with different needs and desires. A major issue for today’s colleges and universities is the increased diversity of students. Thoroughly define the term ‘diversity’. Also, discuss the implications that this increased diversity has for college and university academic and/or administrative leaders.
America’s workforce is continuously changing. Businesses today hire and retain culturally diverse employees to compete in the globalize market. “Without awareness and knowledge of gender, race, culture, and ethnicity, therapists and other helping professionals could unwittingly engage in cultural oppression (A. Dunklin, Ph.D., personal communication, October, 2009). Dr. Dunklin is accurate in his statement. After surviving the destruction of the Third Reich, the civil rights’ movement of the 1960s and the women’s movement of the 1970s, it is hard to understand why the need for diversity still has to be discussed except that as a society, we are infants when dealing with diversity issues. There have been but one or two generations since World War II and the outlawing of segregation in the 1960s (Sciame-Giesecke, Roden, & Parkison, 2009). During this time, society has dealt with tremendous heartache and pain in the past seven decades because of discrimination due to a person’s religion, hair color, sex, disability, body weight, color of skin (or lack of color), sexual preferences, ethnic heritage, and so forth. These issues continue as obstacles to achieving cohesive communities. Neighborhoods, schools, churches, and the worlds of science and psychology provide examples of how much discrimination still remains. It is impossible to not engage in cultural oppression to some degree. Working in a cross culture situation could be likened to working in a cross language situation; unintended oppression approaches zero as “fluency” is obtained in the other language or culture (Dr. K. Seaman, personal communication, October 16, 2009). What is crucial to the success of obtaining “fluency” in diversity is to constantly submit ourselves to self-examination to improve our interactions with everyone we come in to contact with, in order to reduce ...
What if I could go back in time and sit down with my teenage self? The conversation would seem longwinded, and I would probably want to tell me ‘okay’, just so I would shut up. If I could shake that spaced out kid, with his head in the clouds and yell into his face, ‘Listen, it doesn’t have to be difficult! Things can be so much easier if you pay a little more attention.’ Looking back as I went through high school my priorities changed, from music and friends to wanting to join the military. The decision to join the military changed my life and molded the person that I am today. I had it all figured out back then. My plan, my approach, and my dreams were in front of me.
Diversity in my eyes means many different cultures, people, religion, talents, race, appearance, and moral values. Diversity is what makes people unique from others. There are over 7 Billion people in the world. Each Person is different; they have something different from everyone. In this world you can find things that you can never imagine exist. Also Crazy things people can do that you think it’s not possible. All around the world there are exotic, unimaginable, scary, intriguing things and people we will soon come to meet.
Why is diversity important? Differences make us who we are some might say, but how many actually believe that? According to pbs.com, “Phyllis A. Katz, while a professor at the University of Colorado, found babies as young as six-months of age stared significantly longer at photographs of adults who were of a different color than their parents.” It is clear that we notice differences but do we actually take the opportunity to teach each other about diversity, even as infants?
...use I am always doing homework and studying, and I have gotten a lot better at managing my test anxiety. But overall, my college life has been and will continue to constantly change and adjust to new challenges and new opportunities that come along. It has been a learning experience, and I would imagine that it will continue.

For instance, I am now taking care of my skin, eating healthier, hydrating myself, and sleeping more. Besides that, I am now almost completely anxiety-free and am able do things on my own without needing someone beside me. I also can make friends way more effortlessly and communicate with people better. In fact, I even asked my guy friend out to prom even though he ignored me after saying yes, and I later complimented a guy at prom for looking nice. Besides all this, I ultimately have come to the realization that I do not need no one’s approval except my own. Nonetheless, I now only wear clothes that I like and truly expresses who I am. Additionally, I have also taken a lot of college and high school classes that has been very challenging and has shown me how much I truly am capable of if I try. In Communications 101, I allowed myself to be more comfortable speaking and presenting in front of a crowd, in Algebra II, College Prep, and Math 126 I improved and strengthened my math skills drastically, in English 101 and 102 I learned how to write strong, precise essays, and in English 12 Honors I learned about women’s rights and how to inspect
Diversity is a value that shows respect for the differences and similarities of age, sex, culture, ethnicity, beliefs and much more. Having a diverse organization, helps notice the value in other people and also how to teach respect to people that might not know how. The world is filled with different cultures and people that might believe in different things as you, but that doesn’t mean you need to treat them any different. It is imperative for people to grasp diversity because it’ll help people how to engage with others in a respectful yet a hospitable way.
The way that I am today, looking back on my mental attitude from then, I can notice drastic changes to this date. I am a lot more determined in most activities that I do, I like to participate a lot more, and I do not always want to be stuck inside or around the house "loathing everything". The reason for this is because I am in a more fit condition, physically, due to running. Back before high school, I would have never thought that exercising, especially running miles and miles, would have a result of making me a happier individual. In sixth through eighth grade, ...
5 years ago I sat in Muir Middle School with my friends and classmates talking about television shows we watched the night before and plans for that weekend. I didn 't have a job, and my only responsibility was taking care of myself and doing my school work. I never thought that my life could be dramatically changed in a short period of 5 years. 5 years full of events and lessons. I am now 18 years old and my personality, hobbies and appearance are all very different now.
