After observing group dynamics at Denison University over a semester, I have discovered my predilections for certain groups and Denison’s opportunity to find these groups. Across many scales, Denison has the potential for diversity and inclusion. As my first full introduction to this campus concludes, I have observed this diversity in three events during the semester. In a publicized and popular setting, a large group of Denison students, including myself, attended the Female Orgasm. In a smaller scale event, a group of Denisonians with a common interest assembled for a Trans Panel hosted by Outlook during Trans Awareness week. Before I attended this event, many upper-class students encouraged attendance and recommended the entertainment value of the program. Specifically, students often maintained that male students should attend as well. This encouragement may be the fault of a perceived gender bias in the program. The title itself suggests a focus on female sexuality, but many students wished to decrease the separation of the sexes at the event. The students were curious about a traditionally hidden or suppressed sexuality. As The Straight State and Finding Out explain, female sexuality was a mystery or absent altogether throughout history. Military officials did not perceive the female alone as sexual, so witnessing lesbianism often confused these representatives of society. Additionally, Sexologists, the first scientific investigators of human sexuality, ignored female sexuality for the most part. Therefore, when the Female O came to campus, many students needed to justify their attendance. The social encouragement and acceptance advertised for the event was the necessary justification, so many new attendees and first-years
