In life, things happen for a reason, or things do not happen for a reason. Only God knows when, why, and how one’s life will turn out. Sometimes, almost everybody does not like losing somebody unexpectedly or almost losing them. God has our lives in his hands and whatever he beholds of everybody , is what the turnout of our lives are. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:4) In The Death of Ivan Ilych, Ivan does not like his life after he gets married. In The Death of Ivan Ilych, Ivan got married and knew it was a mistake afterwards. “And death . . . where is it?” (Tolstoy pg.151) Ivan waited on it, but he loved his life in the end. It was too late to wish for life now, or try to change it. In the short story, A White Heron, a girl moves to the country with her grandma and meets a cute hunter, who ironically, hunts birds. She ends up saving the bird, instead of having true love. “ She cannot tell the heron’s secret and give its life away.” (Jewett pg.113) However, things in Why the Tortoise’s Shell Was Not Smooth was slightly different than the other two stories. The three literary devices are imagery, symbolism, and foreshadowing. Although, those literary devices can intertwined with each story. The Death of Ivan Ilych is big about foreshadowing. “His pain were being thrust into a narrow, deep black sack.”(Tolstoy pg.145) The black bag means death and the pain being thrusted into the bag is foreshadowing of his feelings and them becoming the death of him. A White Heron embarks on the literary device imagery.
