As employees of Spokes of Hope Worldwide, we are taking this company to a new level. We have decided to partnership with Society for New Americans (SNA). SNA, a non-profit organization provides help for new immigrants and resettled refugees. We will be dealing with different cultures and diversity. This is a training manual to help us get a clear understanding in dealing with different cultures and cultural competencies.
Cultural Competence
There are many meanings to the word cultural competence. Cultural competence is a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system, agency or among professional and enable that system, agency or those professions to work effectively in cross-cultural situations (NCCC, 2016). Let’s take a closer look at cultural competence. Culture is the first part of this word. Culture is the human behavior which deals with the persons’ belief, values, race, ethnic, social and religion. The second word competence is utilized because it infers having the ability to work adequately. Cultural competence happens over a wide period. We need to be more conscious of our cultures and attitudes regarding other cultures. The need to research and obtain the knowledge of how the develop skills that would be beneficial to all cultures. By doing this could increase self- awareness. Sometimes we come to a point where we should be biases or put our own difference aside. Knowing the background of a culture would help you know how to approach the conversation or situation. The positive side of this world is that everyone is different or diverse. Everyone’s culture matters and is important. Everyone carries a piece of the puzzle that would make the world
