Usually, some of the teenagers do not appreciate their life and the freedom that they have; They think that because they are young, will never lose their benefits or their liberty. Teens are not fully aware of the consequences of their actions because always people try to protect them from the reality, from the real world. Today most of the teenager are losing the respect to the authority, and to the law because they are not more afraid to the consequences that can bring a crime. Many people believe that give to teens an adult punishments is to cruel because they are not old enough to take all the responsibility for their crimes, but the reality is that if they are capable to commit a crime they have to be responsible for the consequences. …show more content…
All people may deserve a second chance, even the people who commit serious crimes, but it does not mean that they should not face the consequences of their crimes. Juvenile’s offenders should receive all the necessary help to change their future but they will never change what they already did, then they have to accept the responsibility of their actions. According to Paul Thompson in the article "Startling Finds on Teenage Brains" juveniles are not fully development to commit a crime because it is demonstrated that their immaturity is evident, but it does not have to excuse their crimes."While research on brain-tissue loss can help us to understand teens better, it cannot be used to excuse their violent or homicidal behavior" (Thompson 90) a brain tissue does not have to be a excuse to a crime, and a crime do not have to be an excuse to deny the help to a juvenile. If juvenile offenders decide to mend their way, they have the right to receive help, and the system has the obligation to offer the help to them. There exist a lot of cases where criminals receive the necessary psychological help to face their problems and they start feeling self-reproach. According to Scott Anderson, Greg Ousley a 14-year-old boy who tokes out his parents’ life, after 19 years of help and prison he is sorry for killing his parents. Anderson mentions Ousley 's words, after, he meet with his family "I feel pretty bad, …show more content…
Age does not make any crime less serious, homicide at the age of 15 is a homicide at the age of 19, they would never bring back the person they kill, and they would never restore the family that they destroyed. They should be tried as adults, because if they are allowed to break the law and commit crimes they have to be responsible and face up to what they did, and learn from their mistakes and understand that their actions and their behavior have consequences. If a juvenile is mature enough to commit an adult crime they have to be punishment according to the adult law. The system does not have to be fair with a criminal, they have to be severe because each criminal have to be sentence with the magnitude of their crimes and the age does not have to contribute with the decision. Is time for people to change what they think juveniles are not kids they know, and understand what are they doing, and then they have to face
Juveniles don’t deserve life sentences without parole for many reasons but one main reason is becase people don’t know a person’s life at home and sometimes living in a broken home can affect their social life. According to the article “Greg Ousley Is Sorry for Killing His Parents”, the author Scott Anderson states that,“The only way to unlock the mysteries of the psyche is to dissect your childhood, especially the formative influence of your parents” (Anderson 56), proving that juveniles are easily influenced to do terrifying crimes and is not their fault because no one was there to guide them.
In the future teenagers will take advantage of not getting punished and will start to commit bigger crimes. They aren’t children anymore so if they want to act like adults they should be treated like adults.
The article “Startling Finds on Teenage Brains”, by Paul Thompson, states “While research on brain-tissue loss can help us to understand teens better, it cannot be used to excuse their violent or homicidal behavior”. Thompson writes how even though teens cannot be understandable, they have a certain behavior that was caused by violent or harmful issues they've had at their young childhood. Another example would be in the article “Juveniles Don't Deserve Life Sentences”, by Gail Garinger, says “These children were told that they could never change and that no one cared what became of them”. This shows how these kids can have negative feelings about what they are told at a young age, leading to crimes. Every teen that has committed a crime has had a certain issue or negative way of growing
In today's society, personal responsibilities are held accountable only through explicit knowledge of an action's consequences. Without consequences, no individual can be held liable for his or her actions. As teenagers commit increasingly egregious crimes, the media shifts attention away from the actions of these teenagers and focuses on the seemingly severe punishments they are entitled to. Teenagers accused of violent crimes should be tried and sentenced justly, regardless of age, to ensure the law's equality before its citizens, to educate juveniles regarding the potential severity of their actions' consequences, and to prevent future acts of offense from occurring in society.
Teenagers do not have what we call “adult” rights therefore they should not be sentenced as one. For example in the Article “Kids Are Kids - Until They Commit Crimes” by Marjie Lundstrom she said “It’s a glaring inconsistency that’s getting more glaring by the hour as children as
In Scott Anderson “Greg Ousley Is Sorry for Killing His Parents. Is That Enough”. Highlights in his article ” In the case of juvenile parricide, there is an added paradox. Because it is among the most target-specific of crimes, criminologists believe that an abused juvenile who killed a parent is likely to be at low risk of future criminality if he gets treatment and has a strong social support system when he is released”. This gives a great example because it gives evidence that most teens that commit crimes the do not relapse and commit the crime again if they get the correct rehabilitation. I believe that there should be a neutral between juvenile and adult
It is expected that at a young age, children are taught the difference between what is right and what is wrong in all types of situations. The majority of Supreme Court Justices abolished mandatory life in prison for juveniles that commit heinous crimes, argued this with the consideration of age immaturity, impetuosity, and also negative family and home environments. These violent crimes can be defined as murder, rape, armed robbery, aggravated assault and the like depending on state law. With these monstrous acts in mind the supreme court justices argument could be proven otherwise through capability and accountability, the underdevelopment of the teenage brain and the severity of the crime. Juveniles commit heinous crimes just like adults
The United States has been affected by a number of crimes committed by juveniles. The juvenile crime rate has been increasing in recent years. Everyday more juveniles commit crimes for various reasons. They act as adults when they are not officially adults. There is a discussion about how juveniles should be punished if they commit heinous crimes. While many argue that juveniles who commit serious crimes, such as murder, should be treated as adults, the fact is, juveniles under the age of eighteen, are not adults, and should not be treated as such.
In the essays “On Punishment and Teen Killers” by Jennifer Jenkins and “Some Juvenile Killers Deserve Adult Justice” by Peter A. Weir, it is demonstrated that juveniles use excuses to minimize their punishment. In the essays “Startling Finds On Teenage Brains” by Paul Thompson and “Juveniles Should Be Tried as Adults in Certain Circumstances” by Mary Onelia Estudillo, it is expressed that juvenile delinquents should be held responsible for their
Being charged with adult sentences is a very harsh punishment considering their age. Andrew Medina was fifteen when he got sentenced to life without parole because of a murder that he possibly did not commit. Officers also alleged that he was part of a gang and sent him to spend the rest of his life in a very strict prison. Trevor Jones also got sentenced to life without parole at the age of seventeen because of reckless manslaughter. Even though it was an accident, the victim’s death occurred while Trevor intended armed robbery and was accused of felony murder and will spend the rest of his life in prison. Jacob Ind was sentenced to life without parole. At the age of fifteen, he killed his mother and stepfather in order to put an end to the all kinds of abuse they were putting him through. The jury did not recognize the fact that it was primarily self-defense and accused him of first degree murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence. These are the cases of only three kids who got life without parole but there are so many more. These kids miss out on so many things in life because they will spend most of it locked in a cell. One accident or mistake can ruin their lives forever. That is why I think juveniles should be tried in juvenile
Juveniles deserve to be tried the same as adults when they commit certain crimes. The justice systems of America are becoming completely unjust and easy to break through. Juvenile courts haven’t always been known to the everyday person.
Research supports that teenager’s brains are not fully developed compared to adult brains. Teenagers do not have the same life experience, knowledge, or decision making skills that adults generally have. Many teenagers will commit acts that will not accurately resemble their values when they are older, and as such they should not be punished in a way that would affect them their whole life. Even teens who commit very serious crimes have the prospect of having a change in heart down the road. However, there are some teens who do not fit this mold, some who are not willing to accept what they have done and admit that they have done wrong. For the heinous crimes committed by teenagers not showing any kind of remorse or
During these past years, the issue of whether juveniles should receive life sentences has always been debated on. On one side, the argument people state is that juvenile’s brains are not fully developed so they can’t fully be responsible for their actions. However, on the other side, people state that although the juvenile’s brains is not fully developed, it does not exonerate their actions. Although these two sides have outstanding evidence, the side that has been more compelling toward individuals would be in the middle. This is because juveniles that have committed a heinous crime should be placed in prison for life; on the other hand, if the juvenile shows that he or she has matured and changes for the better, then he or she may be release
Have you ever thought about the world you live in, on how its structure for humans in America? The only society who system and laws were establish by the founding fathers over a century ago. Throughout the century many laws have change but many of the amendments that we follow we interpret through the criminal justice system. As today the laws that are enforced by the government, the media, and political correctness play a major role and also impact the criminal justice system.
Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, particularly those that affect behavior in a certain context. It is a field of work with myriad branches such as neuropsychology, clinical psychology, educational and developmental psychology, health psychology, criminal psychology and many more. The study of psychology as a whole is a grand object of intrigue that I am not entirely familiar with, but very aware of. I have seen many educational psychologists help students in my past. Criminal psychology in particular is the study of the will, thoughts, intents, and reactions of criminals and whoever partakes in criminal activity. In order to become a criminal psychologist one must first earn a bachelor's degree, a master's
