Why should high school students have to complete community service hours to graduate? When students start their high school career, they are thinking about their diploma and their future. People should not have to rake leaves for elderly people or serve food for their local retirement home to go to college. Getting good grades these days is hard enough, but trying to earn a certain number of community service hours makes high school even more demanding. Helping the community is great; however, during school hours, community service can cause students to miss class work, tests, etc. In recent years, youth participation in volunteering for community service has varied, resulting in a growing number of high schools establishing this requirement to have set hours in order to graduate. This increase is most notably seen in the early 80s and late 90s because the rates among youths from 16 years-19 years old soared from 13.4% to 24.5% in the year of 1989. There has been a variety of reactions regarding the movement of mandatory participation in community service, from lawsuits in retaliation, to eagerness to give back, which indicates the question, how has this requirement changed since the 90s and how has it affected the long-term outcomes of citizens? Since the 90s, there has been an even greater push for community service because of federal encouragements, thus engaging more students into the community, and creating civic-minded individuals. In most states and school districts’, they have requirements in place for community services in their schools. However, what do the parents of the students’ think of this? When creating these requirements, are the schools asking the parents on their views? Another solution would be to ask each high school student in every state to vote for having this requirement, or not having this requirement. After the students vote, each state’s legislature, and Senate count the votes, and whichever vote wins, that choice will be put into act. Both of these solutions are exceptional, and I think this country should use them. Everyone in this world, including myself, can agree that community service is probably one of the best things that you can do today. On the other hand, everyone knows the feeling of being forced to do something is a horrible feeling, especially trying to tell older teenagers what to do. Just remember, community service comes from the heart of someone, not the forcing of someone else.
If students want to learn more about their field, they should feel inclined to actually do the work on their own. Also, if a school makes each student complete at least 24 hours of community service to graduate, every student in the school will graduate with the exact same amount, which means hundreds of students are going to the workforce with no advantage over the other.
One way to ensure a civically engaged population is to nurture and promote amongst youth and teenagers the value of participating in one’s community, with the hope that involvement will continue into adulthood. Most school districts in Arizona do not require students to volunteer as a graduation requirement. Those that do, necessitate a number of hours to be completed and logged individually; for example, Deer Valley Unified School District in Maricopa County requires eight hours of volunteering during a student’s senior year. Of course any opportunity for one to help society should be applauded – however, this particular process negates cooperative long-term attachment to a beneficial project and does not incorporate knowledge learned in class, or apply meaning in a real-life context. The implementation of Service-learning programs into public school curriculum would uphold useful skills associated with community involvement and citizenship, as well as address problems in real settings rather than do repetitious tasks in seclusion.

This school should not require 100 hours of community service as a graduation requirement because of the busy lives of teenagers, the pressure of graduation, and loss of enthusiasm for community service. Schools should encourage community service but this is not the way to do it.
Imagine a typical teen, they have a job, homework, sports, and other extracurriculars. They don’t get home till late at night and they are exhausted. This teen can take much more and thankfully they are about to graduate, but wait the school wants them to fit in one hundred of community service into that schedule in order to graduate. How on earth is this busey teen suppose to do that with all that they have going on? Students should not have to do one hundred hours of community service to graduate high school.

In order to be successful in school, there should be a minimum requirement for high school students to do four hours of community service a week. Students who do community service learn to develop leadership skills as well as teamwork skills and this allows them to succeed not only in school, but also in careers and more community involvements. Volunteering helps students be successful in school because it builds a sense of responsibility, confidence, and helps students with scholarships to succeed for their future. I myself, for example, am a high school student who has done volunteer work at the public library.
Throughout their careers, students are asked to complete a variety of tasks. These tasks can vary from homework, to studying for the SAT, being involved in a sport, and participating in community service. The predicament comes into action when administrative faculty are left with the question of whether or not this service should be required to graduate. Although many may argue otherwise, it is clear that community service should be required because it encourages the progress of students at school, gives them exposure to the world, and provides students with knowledge that is inaccessible at school.

Community service is a common service for people to take care of each other and volunteer. People apply to different community services: soup kitchen, taking care of children and homeless people, clinics, churches, schools, neighbor's house and many countless places to volunteer. Some people really enjoy to work at community services while others do not. These community services can be a punishment for criminals because a court assigns them to do so. However, some people do not agree with community service supporters. While some people believe that there should be a community service requirement for high school and college graduation because students need to learn and have experiences there, they are right; on the other hand, a community service requirement should be allowed for two reasons and not be allowed for another three reasons.
Student service learning hours should not be mandatory for high school graduation. Not all students like to volunteer. It would not be fair. Students already have enough requirements to graduate and they should have to do community service. It's a dumb idea.

Opposers say, mandatory community service can have several negative effects on students. “Community service hours are impressive additions to college applications and can provide a student with a great sense of accomplishment; however, the mandatory hours will have many negative consequences” (Cydney Hayes, 2012). Many students are barely even passing the regular school curriculum, and opposers believe that adding the additional load of mandatory service hours will discourage teens from even wanting to graduate. Also mandatory service is usually assigned by a court as punishment to delinquents. “In a small number of cases, community service is required by the court system as restitution for delinquent offenses” (Planty and Bozick, 2006).
