A. BACKGROUND OF RESEARCH English language as stated by Dawit and Abiy (2013) is increasingly becoming an important lingua Franca which is used in business, technology and academic communication. Hence, it is crucial for graduates to be proficient in oral communication skills since competence in oral communication which is in listening and speaking is a must to their academic, personal and professional success in life. Meanwhile, according to Sherwyn, Michael & Judy (2000), oral communication competence can contribute to individuals’ social adjustment and participation in satisfying interpersonal relationship. It is considered to be helpful in improving learning as Staab (1992) states, “ I believe that oral language is important not only as a vital communication tool that empowers us in our daily lives but also as a valuable way to learn” (p.7). Listening and speaking are the most widespread forms of communication and people in most situation spend more time to listen and speak compare to read or write. DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURE The participants which are among diploma level students in UniSZA will be selected randomly and they will be given a brief explanation about the purpose of the activity. Later, each of them will be given a questionnaire. The questionnaire is hand-delivered and will be collected right after the participant finished answering all the questions in the questionnaire. All the data will be analyzed using Microsoft excel software.
D. INSTRUMENTS
a. Questionnaire
The instrument that will be used to collect data for this research is questionnaire. Based on Wikipedia, “a questionnaire is a research instrument consisting of a series of questions and other prompts for the purpose of gathering information from respondents”.
Some of the reason why this instrument is selected are because it is cheap and do not require as much effort from the questioner as verbal or telephone surveys. Furthermore, it often has standardized answers that make it simple to compile
