Protecting yourself from physical violence and abuse is very important because both are unhealthy for your body and mind. Bullying seems to be one of the main factors of physical violence and abuse, about three out of four teens will be bullied before they graduate. The National Crime Prevention Council states that 60 percent of teens encounter bullying once a day if not more. The definition of bullying is stated as, repeatedly doing or saying things to intimidate or dominate another person. A bully is defined as a person who hurts or frightens people who are perceived to be smaller or weaker.
Bullying is harmful because the victims are sometime physically injured from the abuse. The victims may also be abused mentally because they may grow fearful of being in certain places because this is where they are usually bullied. This can lead to skipping class, issues with sleeping, grades dropping, and depression. Being bullied can lead to a victim committing suicide because they might feel helpless and their self-esteem is very low. Most people that bully while in school will later become involved in criminal activity. The reason for this is because bullies usually don’t have the social skills to interact with other people in an appropriate way. A lot of bullies are not successful in life and will most likely drop out of school and will have difficulty keeping a job. Bully victims will also be affected because they will grow fearful of bullies and will not report them because they are scared the bully will attack them. Most people who witness someone being bullied will join in on the bullying because they themselves do not want to become a victim if they try to help the person being bullied.

If a weapon is being carried it can increase the chances of it being used in a crime or suicide. There are gun laws that are in place to try to prevent these things from happening, like the concealed weapon law. This is when a weapon is partially or fully hidden from view but the person has permit to do so, in most states a permit is required to carry a concealed weapon.
First aid is very important for all teachers and staff to know, they need to be prepared to respond to emergencies. All teachers should be CPR certified incase a student or other staff member becomes unconscious at any time. Students should also know who they need to tell in case of an emergency.
