“Everything that’s realistic has some sort of ugliness in it. Even a flower is ugly when it wilts, a bird when it seeks its prey, the ocean when it becomes violent,” claimed Sharon Tate, an actress and a model who values beauty. On the surface, many might identify the word ugly as a description to the physical appearance of almost anything. When a flower wilts, its colour fades and it shrivels. When a bird seeks its prey, it comes across as being menacing as its need to kill becomes evident. The ocean appears to be violent when the waves turn choppy. Even in the Oxford Dictionary, ugly is defined as something “unpleasant or repulsive, especially in appearance”. Additionally, the Oxford Dictionary defines beauty as “a combination of qualities, such as shape, colour, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight”. Many people who do not want to be ‘ugly’ tend to undergo plastic surgery with the hope of improving their outward appearance. The ‘ugly’ might refer to one with a visible scar or someone with a severe condition of eczema which makes the individual less pleasing to the eyes. Unfortunately, society places a significant amount of emphasis on physical beauty, leaving the ‘ugly’ at a disadvantage. They tend to be the ones who get bullied in schools. They tend to get judgmental stares and snide remarks. They tend to face difficulties finding a job in the society where face-to-face interaction is imperative. From time to time, those labelled as ugly tend to face differential treatment by the society. However, this definition provided by the dictionary does not do justice to the diction when a major aspect of it is based solely on physical appearance. As acknowledged by Audrey Hepburn, “Make-up can only make you look pretty on the outside but it doesn’t help if you’re ugly on the inside. Unless you eat the make-up.” With that being said, more emphasis should be given to inner beauty by society.
