In today’s society, artificial intelligence has advanced and evolved how society functions on a daily basis. In order to comprehend the extent of artificial intelligence, the definition must first be stated. Artificial intelligence, or AI, can be defined as the development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence (“Artificial intelligence,” dictionary.com). Examples of AI ranges from Google’s search algorithms to autonomous weapons (“Benefits & Risks of Artificial Intelligence”). However, with the increase of dependency and influence from artificial intelligence, society should keep the following in mind; should we be afraid of singularity? According to “Pros and Cons of Artificial Intelligence” (2015), AI has the ability to work in conditions that involve inhumane circumstances. For example, as a species, humans are able to explore in regions located in outer space that have never been able to be done before the use of AI. Also, according to Daisy (2017), the use of artificial intelligence is a pro in the sense that they do not have emotions. By having no emotions, the artificial intelligent system or machine is able to be on track of accomplishing its goal, without affecting its performance. Simultaneously, this pro can be turned into a con if the artificial intelligent system has a destructive method for achieving its goal. Lastly, the use of artificial intelligence increases the efficiency of products being produced (“Pros and Cons of Artificial Intelligence,” 2015).
The following is a quote stated by president of the Future of Life Institute, Max Tegmark, “Everything we love about civilization is a product of intelligence, so amplifying our human intelligence with artificial intelligence has the potential of helping civilization flourish like never before – as long as we manage to keep the technology beneficial” (“Benefits & Risks of Artificial Intelligence”). Tegmark’s statement paraphrases the central idea of depending on the manner society and individuals manage artificial intelligence will determine if it will evolve or eradicate
