As defined by 2012 Merriam Webster dictionary, an abortion is, “the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus as a spontaneous expulsion of a human fetus usually during the first twelve weeks of development.” Abortion is one of the many things society has a major opinion on. Abortions have always been a debate all over the world, in which many may agree or disagree. In these debates two sides were formed, one being pro-choice and the other being pro-life. Pro-choice is advocating a woman's right to control her own body. To be "pro-choice" on abortion is to believe that individuals have unlimited freedom with respect to their own reproductive systems (thewholeinhishands.com). Opposing, pro-life, according to Tom Head in Civil Liberties, is that the person believes that the government has an obligation to preserve all human life, regardless of intent, viability, or quality-of-life concerns. They believe that once a child is in the womb it is alive and abortion would be an act of murder. Pro-life and pro-choice differ in many opinions like when life begins, the affects it has on the mother, and how religion plays a role in abortion. Over a long period of time and in many different cultures abortion had been acceptable. However; in the late 1800’s abortion became illegal. A main reason being that most surgical procedures were very dangerous, including abortions. Britain was the first place to pass antiabortion laws, but the United States followed and illegalized abortion, except those necessary to save the life of a women. This shows that women do have consequences that come along side abortion. Pro-choice say abortion is safe, however; abortions are never safe for the baby in the womb. As for the mother her safety is questionable as many women suffer mentally and physically. Lastly, religion plays a major role in the choices made with abortion. Pro-choice activists contradict the Christian beliefs. In the bible, Proverbs 6:16-19, it says seven thing that the Lord hates. One of those seven is hands that shed innocent blood and that is exactly what an abortion is. Also, in Exodus 13 it says “Do not murder.” Since pro-life activists believe that life starts as soon as the child is conceived it is murder to abort it. These are two things that are against the will of our God. Since Christians wasn’t to obey the commands of God this is the reason that they are so pro-life.
