The word master has been used in multiple ways from the proficiency in a skill, to owning an establishment, or even ruling over others. When speaking about a master in modern day, it is most used to reference a skill. “A skilled practitioner of a particular art or activity” Oxford3 To be a master of a skill is what those who practice strive for, the recognition of their time invested into that trade. A master of reading, a master of swimming, or even a master of disguise. With how many trades and arts one person may choose from, there are less people who have chosen the route to receive this title. While master is still used when referring to skill, there is a heavy negative connotation attached to it when referencing living creatures. These …show more content…
Written in Dan Schawbel’s article “The secret ingredients are desire and time” Those are two fundamental elements needed to become a master. First Thing is having the desire in your skill or craft, to improve and reach that title. The desire must be not just for the title; it must also be to perfect that which a person practices to see themselves as such. “If a subject excites us, if it stirs our deepest curiosity, or if we have to learn because the stakes are high, we pay much more attention.” If a person continues to desire what they practice they will proceed to learn, and improve in that skill to the point they become a master. With all the desire in the world a person cannot become a master without having the time to practice. Many People who become masters have the time to practice their trade since that is the work they do daily. The job is how the person earns money to live, earns reputation from what they do with clients, and has the ability to see themselves become more proficient with every day put into the skill. With all the hard work that it takes to become a master, the use of the word can still bring negative thoughts when people hear or read …show more content…
“Not only were masters to be masters, they were to be tyrants. Not only were slaves to be chattel labor, they were to act as accomplices in their subjugation. "In practice" found in an article by the National Humanities Center. This is one thought that crosses the minds of people when they hear the word master. Another way is referring to a person as the master of the house, which is a title that would be given to the male head of the household. While in history this would be considered normal, today people can feel insulted by that term being used. Although with animals it is not thought of as negatively to refer to one’s self as a master of a dog, horse, cat. With the different examples the result is the same that people will look down on the word master because they think of the control over something else. Masters have control; but they have control over skill and talents, not people. Why would a person who masters training dogs be thought of negatively if the way they train creates a bond between them? The skills a person chooses to practice and masters are their own; but everyone will have their own moral, and ethical code on what they do with those
At the beginning and even after blacks were granted freedom and rights, slaves were seen as personal property or “things, not human beings”.
The terms of Master and Slave Morality are easy to misunderstand. First of all, the assumption that there is master morality vs. slave morality already makes you believe master morality is the superior one, just by the words itself. Master morality is overall shaping slave morality. Following one another causes a misguided idea of the terms good and evil replacing the idea of “good” and “bad”. But, some would say few people disagreed with Nietzsche because no one really knew Nietzsche existed during his own time, his impact came later and his message became clear in fact
I can understand why people may agree with the 10,000 rule. Becoming a master at anything would require a lot of hard work and dedication. People have come to the conclusion that if somebody puts in 10,000 hours of work towards something they have to be good at it. 10,000 hours can make anyone an expert at embroidery or checkers, but it can't make everyone a star football player, soccer player
People are only trapped in a "master-servant" relationship because they choose to play the game. One could, in theory, play by the rules for a few years to earn enough to cash out, head out west where land is cheap, and build an earthship, grow crops, harness the sun's energy & recycle grey water, living quite comfortably off of the grid. Few people would choose this path, though, because it would require a lot of hard work, and they'd get their hands dirty. Instead, they'd rather work in soul-deadening jobs to buy their half-million dollar plastic houses, and gas-guzzling SUVs, because after all they're entitled, and they "need" these things to be fulfilled. However, when they say they "need" something we must ask the question, why you feel as though you need it. If their idea of needing something is based on the prediction that they will be happy, than we can say that their preconceived notion is nothing more than what Gilbert and Tim Wilson describe as "the gap between what [we] people predict and what we ultimately experience" (Gertner 168). People fail to realize there is always something bigger and better out there, and because of this their predictions will continue to be inaccurate and over exaggerated. For example, a person who has a
Leaders and managers seem to have a lot in common Being a good manager does not automatically make you a good leader, however if you are to combine the two you can become a great manager/Leader.
As I was reading in the textbook, I learned that there are differences between being a manger and being a leader. From what I learned from the material being called a good manager or a good leader are both great compliments however, being called a good leader would be considered a greater compliment than being called a good manager.
out a master on their own in order to learn. There is no hierarchy to advance in,
Nothing can be achieved without work. Average input results in average output. But hard work leads to excellent achievement. Colvin says "There's no evidence of high-level performance without experience or practice." He means excellence does not come naturally. A person cannot just pick up a baseball bat and expect to make a home run. “The most accomplished people need around ten years of hard work before becoming world-class, a pattern so well established researchers call it the ten-year rule.” This was proven to be true on many accounts, like Bobby Fischer an expert chess player at 16, who had 9 years of practice (Colvin). A person does not become a champion over night. A person needs to work hard to achieve greatness. A person could have absolutely zero skills in painting, but after 10 years of working hard with a lot of practice they would be quite successful in painting.
It is obvious just by the names that according to Nietzsche master-morality is superior above people with “slave-morals”. Nietzsche said that slave-moralities were, “The good man must, in any case, be the safe man; he is good-natured, easily deceived, perhaps a little stupid. Everywhere that slave-morality gains the ascendancy, language shows tendency to approximate the significance of the words “good” and “stupid”. A list fundamental difference: the desire to freedom, the instinct for happiness and the refinements of the feeling of liberty belong as necessarily to slave-morals and morality, a arfice and enthusiasm in reverence and devotion are the regular symptoms of an aristocratic mode of thinking and estimating (Nietzsche, 409).” To Nietzsche, he considered those of slave-morality different from those who held master-morals, What made those with “slave-morals” different is that according to Nietzsche people with slave morals were are from nature not because of an overflow of wealth and powers. Those of slave-morality are really those who are good by nature and will help others because it is the good thing to do but also are dumb and naive. There's also something else that makes those with slave-morals different according to Nietzsche those people also are seeking freedom, by that he means that they seek a sense of independence which they do not have because of lack of wealth and
To Nietzsche the master morality was the attribute of the ultimate race, a race not of color or ethnicity, but one that fought for power. The masters were those who by force and power sought after what was good, which included anything that would be helpful. Not concerning them selves with society as a whole, only with rising to power and the responsibility of self. The masters he believed were to dominate the slaves and the slaves should just willingly submit. The master morality was often attributed with qualities such as power, nobility, and independence, placing them beyond good and evil. Striving t...
The study showed that the masters had a high level of tranquility, purity and personal integration that the other inexperienced group didn’t have and so they were able to concentrate and perform well.
treated them harshly. The masters’ perception of blacks was that they lacked self-discipline and morality. They justified slavery by claiming that they were training the slaves to master self discipline through work and also train them in the precepts of God. Not all masters were harsh and cruel. Some treated their slaves with kindness and subsequently were well loved. However, it still emerges that a majority of even the kindest masters still did not attach much humane value to their slaves. This has been exemplified in that despite amicable relationships, the slaves were rarely freed but instead passed on to other masters after the demise of their master like any other property owned by the late master.
Mastering one’s self is essential in reaching one’s full potential. In this paper I will attempt to articulate what it means to achieve personal mastery. I will first provide my own personal portrayal of personal mastery. Following, I will illustrate examples from my life, and what personal mastery means to me.
I had a very respected position in my tribe. People came up to me for consultancy because of my high experience of life. Apart from teaching I also did some house works with my slaves. I did not want to lay a heavy burden on their shoulders, I believed in justice not injustice. My husband and I had a couple of fights involving the slaves; he disagreed on the fact that I had to work with them but I ignored him. I did not want the slaves to do a lot of work. They just cleaned the house prepared the meal and did other such things. My slaves were not treated as slave; they lived in a comfy condition, they were never mistreated. I never saw them as slaves. The only two things that gave them this name, slave, were that they weren’t paid and they didn’t have the right to own property.
What makes a champion? It is not the trophy. It is not the talent. Not the salary, the most points, the fastest time, or the most records. It is not even being the best of the best. All of these things are just the benefits of what makes a true champion. You see, the real winners in life are those who have the courage to see the impossible. They are the people who overcome and persevere through all adversity. They learn from their mistakes, and no matter what, they never give up on their dreams. A true champion has VISION...
