The word master has been used in multiple ways from the proficiency in a skill, to owning an establishment, or even ruling over others. When speaking about a master in modern day, it is most used to reference a skill. “A skilled practitioner of a particular art or activity” Oxford3 To be a master of a skill is what those who practice strive for, the recognition of their time invested into that trade. A master of reading, a master of swimming, or even a master of disguise. With how many trades and arts one person may choose from, there are less people who have chosen the route to receive this title. Written in Dan Schawbel’s article “The secret ingredients are desire and time” Those are two fundamental elements needed to become a master. First Thing is having the desire in your skill or craft, to improve and reach that title. The desire must be not just for the title; it must also be to perfect that which a person practices to see themselves as such. “If a subject excites us, if it stirs our deepest curiosity, or if we have to learn because the stakes are high, we pay much more attention.” If a person continues to desire what they practice they will proceed to learn, and improve in that skill to the point they become a master. With all the desire in the world a person cannot become a master without having the time to practice. Many People who become masters have the time to practice their trade since that is the work they do daily. The job is how the person earns money to live, earns reputation from what they do with clients, and has the ability to see themselves become more proficient with every day put into the skill. Another way is referring to a person as the master of the house, which is a title that would be given to the male head of the household. While in history this would be considered normal, today people can feel insulted by that term being used. Although with animals it is not thought of as negatively to refer to one’s self as a master of a dog, horse, cat. With the different examples the result is the same that people will look down on the word master because they think of the control over something else. Masters have control; but they have control over skill and talents, not people. Why would a person who masters training dogs be thought of negatively if the way they train creates a bond between them? The skills a person chooses to practice and masters are their own; but everyone will have their own moral, and ethical code on what they do with those
