To understand what the implications of industrialization were, we must first define the term. Industrialization primarily refers to the advancement of technology in factories in order to produce more output and use less human labor, although the definition can go much deeper than that. It is the movement away from agriculture to provide goods, towards the use of the advancement in technology to utilize machines instead (PPT Industrialization). This use of machinery became much more preferred because through manual labor, it was a very slow process where human error would cause slower production, and the technology was cheaper to invest in than paying working employees. One of the outcomes of this is the new classes that were created because of the industrialization; there were wealthy elite from noble backgrounds, middle class who lived a very comfortable life in the countryside with an increase in product options, and then the working class. The mass influx of working class people in the cities led to very unsanitary conditions. There was heavy pollution because of the smoke from the coal burning factories, very crowded living situations with animals inside the buildings, and quickly spreading diseases because of the dirty streets and buildings (PPT Industrialization). The workers who had the skill set for manual labor became obsolete as they were no longer needed, so their income dramatically decreased. The workers during the day were watched carefully and forced to work quickly, so many of the jobs were monotonous and farm-working families were separated. Middle Class women slowly transitioned out of the labor force because unless they were needed to work, society placed more emphasis on them taking care of their families in the home. Working class women, however were still expected to work to make up for their husbands wages, and were preferred because of their small hands. Some became domestic servants as well and would either send money home or save it for their goals. Life was not comfortable for the working class, and many of them were depressed because of their
