The Impact of ICT on an Adult in Employment Including the Effect on

His/Her Working Style

Rapid changes in information and communication technology (ICT) over

the last decades have had a radical impact on how today’s

organisations work, cooperate and compete. Information systems,

Telecommunication and the Internet challenge the thinking on

organisational structures and industry boundaries and fuel the debate

on globalisation. The growth and subsequent burst of the dot-com

bubble demonstrates how firms continue to struggle how to best take

advantage of the new technological possibilities. This underlines the

importance of ICT as a Business Process Innovation, ICT Strategy and

Planning, Process Integration and Project Management, ICT

Infrastructure and a capstone integration course.

Overall ICT is seen as a benefit to the individual particularly in the

business environment, however the rapid uptake of the Internet, of

mobile telephony and of broadband networks all demonstrate how this

technology has begun to invade all of our lives. It is true to say

that because Companies and Firms have to maintain a competitive edge

they will invest more and more money into ICT as it is seen as an easy

way to expand and control business. The true social impact of this is

never fully considered. A good example of this is the use of mobile

phones. These are probably today one of the most popular items of

technology on the market. There are however well document health

risks, these are very much played down by the manufacturers, the same

could be said about Cigarette smoking in the earlier days. We are only

now beginning to realize the full impact.

To properly asses the effect of ICT on an individual it is necessary

to use an example. Recently during one of our lessons Paul Stevens, a

police officer working as a Crime intervention officer for schools,

met with us to explain how he uses ICT and the effect it has on him. I

will be using his experiences within this project to illustrate the

effect of ICT on his working life.

Mr Stevens viewed his mobile phone as probably the most useful
