Title Social media has became a major aspect in our everyday lives, it has influenced the way live, communicate, and think. In 2008 only 24% of the United States population owned a social media account, now 8 years later and that percentage has more than tripled (Statista). In recent years, our generations dependence of online social media for our everyday communication has dramatically increased because of social media sites such as Facebook. Facebook is a site that is based around the ability to share information, thoughts, and feelings quickly and cohesively amongst friends and even the whole world. Although, Facebook has the intentions of being a better way for people to unify and communicate, its important to realize that Facebook has deprived our generation of the ability to communicate effectively in person, which ultimately has been proven to lead to a number of negative effects on people. Because the current generation has found it easier to communicate via Facebook, studies have seen a decrease in the number of person-to-person contact, and body language communication amongst people, both of which have been proven to show negative effects on people’s interpersonal communicating. Facebook is replacing the necessities for effective communication causing it to affect people’s behavior in a number of ways. Facebook has replaced the need to meet people in person, and because of this, people are less likely to be able to hold an understanding/meaningful conversation because they are used to talking through Facebook and not expressing the necessary emotions needed to fully understand one another. Facebook users to trust Facebook’s platform to carryout the users everyday communication needs, this has caused a lack of face-to-f... ... middle of paper ... ...r even through a video chat website like Skype (Hope). This all ties back to being able to communicate in person and by allowing our minds making the connection between body language, tone of voice, and being able to see facial expressions from Face-to-Face contact. Facebook lacks these components, which has the effects of less emotional connection from person to person. We have Trusted Twitter to carryout our communication tasks and therefore we as a generation are lacking these key traits for effective communication. Facebook may have intentions of being useful by connecting people together but if you look past the grey lines you can see that Facebook has actually done the opposite. We as a generation are now lacking the key necessities needed for healthy communication. We have pushed aside body language, meeting in person, and it has effected us in numerous ways.
