Facebook is one of the most famous social networking websites which has become a part of the daily routine for most college students. This has led to a question amongst researchers whether students’ use of this networking site influences their academic outcomes. This literature review will examine and synthesize the published current research concerning the impact of Facebook on college students’ academic performance. Even though most studies are inconclusive in determining the relationship between Facebook and academic performance, all researchers contribute to understanding the way that Facebook might affect students’ academic achievement. While some studies speculate that Facebook does not impact academic outcomes, most studies show that there is a significant relationship between Facebook usage and college students’ academic performance, which is indicated by GPAs and students’ engagements. Minor Research about Facebook’s Impacts on Academic Performance Few researches found that there is no relationship between Facebook and college students’ academic performance. For instance, Sana Rouis examines that Facebook has no significant effect on students’ achievement (296). In her research, she surveyed a large group of 203 undergraduate students and employed two different types of data analysis (298). Focusing on the same type of participants, Syarif Husin Lubis et al. also found that there is no difference between Facebook users and non users in terms of their academic performance (590). Although Lubis et al. surveyed a smaller number of participants, their research is more thorough than Rouis’ because it employs more control variables (591). Michael J. Bugeja, a director of Iowa State University and author of the article “Facing the Facebook” in The Chronicle of Higher Education, argues that technology in schools was supposed to have a positive outcome, it was supposed to help students engage and network yet it 's only becoming a distraction. Students are more entertained by social media, and technology than education. Although he concedes that social media is “fascinating” and is a resourceful way for social interaction; he also argues how it has taken a toll on “The Facebook generation”. Technology has begun to limit the student 's mind and affect their academic intelligence.
Some believe that ‘Social networking sites help students do better at school. 59% of students with access to the Internet report that they use social networking sites to discuss educational topics and 50% use the sites to talk about school assignments” (Procon) However, “If the students checked Facebook just once during the 15-minute study period, they had a lower grade-point average”. (Clemmitt) This shows that social media is the main source of distraction which does not allow individuals to focus on their academic work. This is harmful to society because individuals will not be able to completely focus on a task. Thus individuals would complete their tasks with little thought on how they are doing it. Procon has also mention that “People who use social media have a lower grade point average (3.02) social media than people who don't use social media. (3.82) they also tend to get lower test grades”. This shows that the impact social media had on students’ academic career is negative. With a low grade point average students feel no need to push themselves which leads to low self-motivation. Even though some may argue that Social Media has led to educational opportunities, others may argue that it is has done more damage to academics

During the past two decades or so, there has been very explosive development of the Internet in our everyday lives. The growing use of the Internet has let to a variety social media sites. Facebook has become an essential part of almost everyone’s life, but especially college students. According to the article “Social Networking: Boundaries and Limits” only 10-20%of facebook users are not college aged students (AlDoubi, Anderson, Aragon, & Isaacs, 2014, p. 26). As the use of Facebook has continued to grow by both the number of users and the amount of time each user spends on it, we should be asking one question: Does the use of Facebook help or hurt college students in terms of social and educational opportunities? From a social standpoint, Facebook seems to have a lot to offer. As stated in the article “The Impact of Social Media on Children, Adolescents, and Families” Facebook gives people the chance to donate their time and efforts in the community by notifying them of upcoming events” (Clarke-Pearson & O’Keeffe, 2011, p. 2). Within the article “Me and My 400 Friends: The Anatomy of College Students’ Facebook Networks, Their Communication Patterns, and Well-Being” it states that an experiment preformed at the University of California proved that the more often college students were on Facebook, the more they felt supported from loved ones back home. Also, this made them feel as if they were a greater part of their college campus (Manago, Taylor & Greenfield, 2012, p. 370). In today’s society, very few recognize that social media is an addiction because as stated earlier, roughly fifty percent of users are logging onto Facebook daily to begin with. Therefore, nobody is looking to make any changes in Facebook’s usage policies or changes in how college students have made social media an addiction. Social behavior expert Megan Sponcil from Youngstown State University in Ohio states that “about 57% of social network users are 18-29 years old and have a personal profile on multiple social media websites” (4). The statistic that Sponcil points out shows that 19-28 year olds are the ones that are mostly affected by social media addiction. Poor performance in the classroom and a serious addiction will continue if this addiction is not broken.
First of all, “36 percent of people surveyed listed social networking as the “biggest waste of time”, above fantasy sports (25 percent), watching TV (23 percent), and shopping (9 percent)” (ProCon). Above all, studies show that after one checks is or her social media, it takes at least two hours to return back to full attention on his or her task. Social media entices people with one notification, then results in checking and talking to other people leading the person enticed into procrastination. This waste of time leads people, mainly kids, to procrastinate in school and leads them to having poor grades in their classes. “Students who use social media have an average GPA of 3.06, while nonsocial media users have an average GPA of 3.81, and students who used social media while they were studying scored 20 percent lower on their tests” (ProCon). Parents and teachers argue that social media is the cause of our generations downfall. Students had a higher GPA in elementary and middle school than in high school and college because social media were brought into their lives. Social media does not only have an impact on the grades of students, but on their lives as well. Cyberbullying has reached an all-time high, and many students are being driven by what others say about them on social media. “49.5 percent of students reported being victims of cyberbullying and 33.7 percent actually committing bullying behavior online” (ProCon). Social networking has made its way into American culture quickly and is more prevalent now than ever before. Many people have different views on the relevance and benefits of social networking, whether they are positive or negative standpoints. Nevertheless, social media and networking is a part of our American lifestyles as a whole. As a Computer Information Systems major and studying the foundations and composition of computer applications, I would like to research the effects that social networks have on underclassmen undergraduate students attending an Historically Black College or University. In order to conduct this research, a study and survey must be held to determine whether social networking positively or negatively affects grade point averages by recording the number of social networks students are actively using and the number of hours spent on these applications in comparison to grade point averages. This research is important because there are many individuals who do not know the effects of their social networking, or lack thereof, has on their grades, sleeping patterns, health, and lifestyles in general. Although this research will focus on grade point averages of students, it will also determine if social networking has effects on other aspects of the college life such as sleeping patterns, health, and awareness.
As with just about everything, social media should be used in moderation. Studies have shown that adolescents and even college students who are on Facebook too much have lower grades (Rosen, 2011).

Social Media has become a very essential tool in the society; in addition, it has a huge impact on communication and learning process. Social media is defined as websites and applications used for social networking. “As of September 2013, seventy-one percent of online adult use Facebook, eighteen percent use Twitter and seventeen percent use Instagram, twenty-two percent use PInterest, and another twenty-two percent use LinkedIn. (PewReasearch, 2013). In addition, "Between February 2005 and August 2006, the use of social networking sites among young adult internet user ages eighteen and twenty-nine jumped from nine percent to forty-nine percent. The usage of social media had grown drastically.” On social media sites like these, users may develop biographical profiles, communicate with friends and strangers, do research, and share thoughts, photos, music, links, and more” (Socialnetworking.procon,2012). Social media has impacted everyone in several different ways. In this present time, majority of college student use Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Social media has a bold impact college student's grades, social interactions, and the teaching and learning process.
Students involved in activities on social media sites during the study resulted in a reduction in their focus of attention. This causes a decrease in their academic performance, and concentration to learn as well.
