Imagine a world without the adorable pictures of baby polar bears on the cover of National Geographic. If Earth’s climate continues on the same path, these amazing creatures will no longer exist. For most non-scientists, Earth’s climate and how it impacts the biosphere, or the plants and animals within the lower portion of the atmosphere, is a difficult concept to fully understand. According Luigi Romolo, a climatologist at Louisiana State University (LSU), “. . . Earth’s climate is in an interglacial state of the Quaternary ice age.” While this may seem scary, it simply means that we are in between periods where ice dominates Earth’s surface. Most researchers can agree that climate change is changing the Earth, altering polar, marine, …show more content…
According to Suniti Karunatillake, a professor of geology at Louisiana State University (LSU), “the concentration of carbon dioxide is reaching levels [that have] not [been] seen since fifty mega annum (fifty million years ago).” The rising levels of carbon dioxide are causing the temperatures within the different ecosystems, testing the thermal tolerance levels, or the highest temperature that an organism can survive and thrive in, for all biota. The temperature increase, for the tropical environment, will have an impact, but because tropical forests are naturally warm the biota within will not be as …show more content…
This phrase is just one of many ways that societies are doing their part in reducing admissions. Most of the world has adopted the green ideology, but there are still plenty of people who believe that these actions are not warranted. Richard Lindzen, a professor of meteorology at MIT, believes that there is no need to rush into action (18). Lindzen believes that “Wasting resources on symbolically fighting ever present climate change is no substitute for prudence” (19). I agree that wasting resources is an unproductive use of energy; however, I also believe that there are things we can do to help that require little or no energy use. Bill McKibben, a published writer on ecological topics, states that finding solutions to reducing climate change, and levels of carbon dioxide, will require a lot of work, but it is not impossible if the whole global community adopts the tactics (16). According the United States Environment Protection Agency (EPA), there are ten simple things that people can do to help reduce the emissions, and possible save them money. The EPA also claim that by using water efficiently, like only running the dishwasher when it is completely full, can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide produced by one hundred pounds (EPA). One of the biggest ideas that the EPA suggests is recycling. Much of the developed world has begun to incorporate recycling into societal practices and law. I know first-hand
The Root Cause of Climate Change Climate change is a major issue that is only going to get worse. Climate change is a change in global or regional climate patterns. It has become more apparent since the mid to late 20th century onwards and is attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels. Climate change has been an important issue for decades that has effects on the environment and people of the world with the end result potentially being
Freshman Composition II Section: A 19th November, 2014 The Effects of Climate Change within Our World Today Thesis: For the past 50 years, climate has been changing rapidly, this we cannot disregard; consequently, in order to lessen the consequences, our society should be educated on effects it has. I. The loss of polar ice cap is one of the major factors contributing to climate changes. A. Greenhouse gas plays a major role in climatic changes. B. The heat content of the oceans is growing and growing
over the world, climate is varied; however, that is not the problem. The problem is that our climate and weather patterns are changing and leaving disaster and catastrophe in its wake. The common question of debate is whether humans are the main cause of this climate change, if it is solely a natural occurrence, and what can we do about it? “Climate change refers to any significant change in the measures of climate lasting for an extended period of time. In other words, climate change includes major
Climate change has always been a problem in past and now during our days. Over the years we as a globe has been able to evolve from all the changes with temperature to changes in scenery. Climate change has always been a big factor to changes on earth. Scientist have been studying for years and years with ways to prevent or help slow down the effects of climate change. Climate change has been evolving for so long that it has a long term effect on earth with many ways to help prevent it from getting
current climate change is an outer mirror of our inner consciousness. It is an outer mirror of our attitude to try to conquer nature, instead of being in harmony with nature, but in the end the part can never conquer the whole.” - Swami Dhyan Giten. Climate change has been a common topic for discussion and debate in recent years. Many people question the idea of global warming and prefer to categorize it as a merely a theory. Whereas there are other individuals are certain about the effects and consequences
appreciating this beautiful planet like we should. McFague states "climate change is surely the most severe test that humanity has ever faced, not only in terms of survival but equally important, in regard to our ‘humanity '. This quote is very important because the reason that this planet is dying has a lot to do with our humanity in the sense that we aren 't treating the planet the way we should be. For example, the climate change that is currently being experienced across the globe is a result of
In recent years, climate change has become a major point of focus in society. There have been debates on whether or not it exists, and, if it does exist, what the most practical way to deal with it would be. The effects of climate change go far beyond just impacting the environment: it also affects how society runs and functions. Climate change has impacted every industry that has to do with the environment, such as lumber and fishing; it also dictates how processing and manufacturing businesses
Climate change is a long-term alteration in the statistical distribution of weather pattern over periods ranging from decades to millions of years. The world is currently experiencing drastic change in temperature. This change can be felt in the tropical climate areas where the weather is getting hotter and hotter every day. The change in global temperatures and precipitation over time is due to natural variability or to human activity. It is also caused by accumulation of greenhouse effects (Arrhenius
There are so many factors in today’s growing population and its action that contributes to the environment. With the rise in population there is also increase in the needs and demands resulting in more production of food and assets. Most of the actions of human lead to increased environment risks which in return will only effect the livings of this planet. Currently mostly all individuals have at least one form of vehicle for transportation. There is increased industrialization and requires a lot
relaxation to the Caribbean islands, but also many negative environmental impacts such as air pollution, solid waste and sewage. The climate change is forced by many environmental impacts and this research will be undertaken to show how the cruise tourism with its negative impacts on the environment force the climate change since there
Climate change is defined as the alteration in patterns in temperature and weather. A new wave of climate change, bringing warmer temperatures and more extreme storms, began to catch the attention of scientists sometime in the late 20th century. It is blamed perhaps on the increased burning of fossil fuels, contributing to the greenhouse gases that harm the environment (“Climate Change,” CQ). On the contrary, it is something that simply occurs naturally. It occurs over long periods of time and has
argues that identifiable consequences of climate change are substantial to understand climatic events (Ingersol, 1899 p.270 cited in Burroughs, 2007). The term ‘climate change’ indicates the statistically long – term period environmental deviation of the global atmosphere including the averages state of the climate or natural climate variability (the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Chang (IPCC), 2007). During the past historical and recent decades, climate change and the Earth’s responses illustrate
Amongst many controversial debates, climate change has been one on the record books the past centuries. This contemporary topic has affected numerous scholars, researchers and politicians debating on opposite sides of the poles and it has become a war of facts versus opinions. When taking a look at NASA, Earth’s 2016 surface temperature was recorded as the warmest year since 1880, and 2017 was the third warmest year on record. The rate of climate change has been growing at alarming rates in recent
argument on climate change for approximately 200 years. Scientists have studied the facts, recognized the evidence, and determined that global warming is the most important problem the world is facing today. American sociologist Eric Klinenberg wrote, “In recent years the cumulative toll of the greenhouse gasses that they have emitted has profoundly destabilized the climate, and with it, the social environment” (Klinenberg, xx). The idea of climate change hurting the social environment connects James
Climate change is a term used to describe the increase in the average temperature of the earth’s surface and has been a major problem recently. Our world is constantly changing and therefore so is our climate, as our country industrializes we create more greenhouse gases from the immense human activity being produced. “These gases get into the atmosphere when coal, natural gas and oil is burned for energy and over the last century the burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil has increased the concentration
