Throughout this essay I will analyze today’s advertising industry mainly through social media. I will complete this by exploring all the advertisements that were targeted to me, being the consumer over a three day period. Firstly, it is important to define what advertising actually is according to Will Rogers,“advertising is the art of convincing people to spend money they don’t have for something they don’t need” (Pg. 32). Clearly this quote insinuates advertising can be a persuasive business, this is a topic which will be discussed when looking at the advertisements targeted at myself. I will start by explaining how I collected each advertisement. Firstly I made a chart in order to make it easier to keep track of the data which I was collecting, this is known as Figure 1 within the appendix. My research began on Friday, September, 23, 2016 and commenced on Sunday, September, 25, 2016. I collected data morning, afternoon and evening over the three day period. When collecting data in the morning this was usually between 8AM and 12PM, the afternoon was between 1PM until 5PM and evening was anywhere from 6PM until 11PM. I would visit various social media sites which I am a member of during these times, they consisted of Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and Youtube, I also looked for any other advertisements when visiting other websites such as a streaming website which I use to watch movies and television shows. Within this essay I plan to focus my analysis on the different categories which arose within each social media platform. ...ake two recommendations to advertisers, the first recommendation would be for those advertisements on Youtube to be less intrusive, it should be the consumers choice whether we want to continue watching the ad or not, it can be frustrating for consumers as some of the advertisements that do pop up are not always relevant to a consumers life. The second recommendation would be to pay close attention to the demographics of each consumer you target, this is in reference to the French advertisement which popped up, if the consumer can not understand the message you are sending them due to a demographic issues then you are wasting your money and the consumers time. To conclude advertisers were accurate in targeting me for health and beauty advertisements, it is nice to know what products are out there for consumers but can be overwhelming if the advertisements take over.
