Joose tilt sparks Joe camel alcohol minor is kids’ cigarettes CBS/AP The marketing of alcohol and cigarettes, as indicated in the ad above, has influenced adolescent behavior in a negative way, justifying worldwide concern. Because it is widely known that adolescents are a particularly impressionable demographic, many advertisers target them, exposing them to the many dangers associated with the consumption of alcohol and cigarettes. Advertisers try to make their products sound better than they are, to convince consumers to buy the products, without regard for the health of the consumers. Research shows that risky behaviors that result from alcohol and tobacco use are a leading cause of death among adolescents. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2015) reports that although cigarette smoking among adolescents declined from 2011 to 2014, the use of other tobacco products increased. In addition, even though the legal drinking age is 21, underage drinkers consumed 11% of all alcohol in the United States (CDC, 2015). During adolescence, many young people undergo an identity crisis as they mature into early adulthood. Furthermore, throughout this stage, they often experience psychological battles, resulting in immature decision-making that is highly influenced by their environment, including advertisements. Considering this, if retailers became more concerned with the health of their consumers rather than with increasing sales and stop advertising to adolescents, adolescents might have a better chance of following a healthy lifestyle. Despite the effectual benefits of advertisement on society, the promoting of alcoholic beverages and tobacco has long been an unhealthy influence on the behavior of adolescents. Therefore, parents must counteract this behavior by understanding and setting authoritative boundaries for the individual.
