The Image of Nursing The purpose of this paper is to show how in today’s society, nurses struggle to get positive professional recognition, despite attempts to change the image of nursing in society on public platforms. Data sources used on the image of nursing were identified through the CINAHL, Google Scholar, YouTube and Proquest databases from 2005-2015. The search term was image of nurs*, these articles were peer reviewed. The image of nursing in the media is predominately negative and does not match the reality of what professional nursing is. This relates to the example demonstrated by Kelley Johnson because even though she used the media to promote a positive image of nursing, she was still not given proper recognition by the hosts of The View instead she received criticism. Nursing theory and education defines nursing as its own specific career, but it is stereotypical that nurses have no scope of practice but rather to just follow orders (Hoeve et al., 2014). It is important for nurses, as well as nursing students and educators to promote nursing in the public and engage the public in the image of their profession (Weaver et al., 2013). The media is a huge tool that can captivate a multitude of people, and by putting nursing in the media often and working with it to build a strong public support, as well as using TV shows and advertisements, nursing can be positively and accurately addressed (Weaver et al., 2013). Nurses must continue to speak to the media about the work nurses do and encourage them to promote a full range of nursing, and challenging misconceptions (Ontario Nurses’ Association [ONA], 2013). Nursing students can show the public that they are professional by dressing in an appropriate manor, and doing their job with confidence and accuracy. Nursing students can present a positive personal image in their daily lives. They can do this by eating healthy, exercising, living smoking free, and practicing what they promote to the public. Nurses need to continue to promote nursing as an attractive career, as well as publicize what they do to gain respect for the profession, and promote it to future generations (ONA, 2013).
