Tragic events like the shootings at Columbine High School capture public attention and concern, but are not typical of youth violence. Most adolescent homicides are committed in inner cities and outside of school. They most frequently involve an interpersonal dispute and a single victim. On average, six or seven youths are murdered in this country each day. Most of these are inner-city minority youths. Such acts of violence are tragic and contribute to a climate of fear in schools and communities.
Research findings are identifying factors in the development of aggressive and antisocial behavior from early childhood to adolescence and into adulthood. Prospective longitudinal and intervention studies have identified major correlates for the initiation, escalation, continuation, and cessation of serious violent offending.
Many studies indicate that a single factor or a single defining situation does not cause child and adolescent antisocial behavior. Rather, multiple factors contribute to and shape antisocial behavior over the course of development. Some factors relate to characteristics within the child, but many others relate to factors within the social environment (e.g., family, peers, school, neighborhood, and community contexts) that enable, shape, and maintain aggression, antisocial behavior, and related behavior problems.
The research on risk for aggressive, antisocial and violent behavior includes multiple aspects and stages of life, beginning with interactions in the family. Such forces as weak bonding, ineffective parenting (poor monitoring, ineffective, excessively harsh, or inconsistent discipline, inadequate super-vision), exposure to violence in the home, and a climate that supports aggression and violence puts children at risk for being violent later in life. This is particularly so for youth with problem behavior, such as early conduct and attention problems, depression, anxiety disorders, lower cognitive and verbal abilities, etc. Outside of the home, one of the major factors contributing to youth violence is the impact of peers. In 1966, NIMH created a Center for Studies of Crime and Delinquency, which was the locus of pioneering research on aggressive, antisocial, and violent behavior and its consequences. NIMH-supported research has generated information needed to identify, treat, and prevent not only the causes of violent behavior but also the effects of violence on victims, for example, child abuse. Most recently, the NIMH has assumed a lead role, along with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in developing a Surgeon General's report on the topic of youth violence. The NIMH believes that this report, as follow-up to the Surgeon General's Report on Mental Health, will be an effective and highly credible means of educating the public about the interaction of mental disorders and youth violence.

This is just part of the brutality that Columbus had put upon the Natives. More cruelty can be seen when Columbus sent five hundred Natives as slaves to the King and Queen in Spain. Also stabbing of Indians was done as a sport and those that resisted against the Spaniards were hunted down as animals (Zinn, 2009, p.482). Zinn shows that the Columbus story is one of the many myths of Western civilization. All the stories about Columbus especially in the USA since, it is a celebration are seen as a heroic adventure. However, many teachers argue that children should not be told such a violent story filled with horrific history (Zinn, 2009, p.485). Not only have juvenile crime rates gone up in the past few years, but a heightened awareness of these crimes exists because of how violent natured these crimes have become. But what happens to cells that fail to pass a checkpoint during mitosis/meiosis? Well this is another part of apoptosis. There are 3 major checkpoints that determine whether a cell passes or fails, and whether or not they can go through. These checkpoints consist of the G1 checkpoint, G2 checkpoint, and the metaphase checkpoint. Proteins play the role of “traffic cops” and determine whether the cells are sufficient enough to be passed through the cycle. In the G1 checkpoint, the proteins check for nutrients, growth factors, and DNA damage. In the G2 checkpoint, the proteins check for cell size (whether it is big enough), and DNA replication. Finally, in the Metaphase checkpoint, the proteins check for the Chromosomes and spindle attachments. Moreover, in some cases, the cell fail these checkpoints, and this is where apoptosis comes in play. As stated before, apoptosis kills cells that are unwanted, or not helpful. If a cell fails a checkpoint during mitosis or meiosis, they are seen as unwanted, and possibly harmful to the body, therefore is fixed by apoptosis. Over the past half century, violence in the United States has increased dramatically. Children who were raised in a tough, low-income neighborhood often fail to escape exposure to violence. They may witness homicides, assaults, and some may even have had a friend who had been killed. According to recent research, these children have higher violence rates than those kids who grew up in a non-violent neighborhood.
Child abuse is the physical, sexual, or emotional mistreatment, or neglect of a child. It can be detrimental to one’s daily life, affecting not only the abused child, but also those who are associated with the child. It can have lasting effects that may carry over to adulthood and cause potential issues with relationships or perhaps within their own families as well. It is important that we learn to recognize the signs of child abuse and neglect so that we can save the lives and future of our children. Child abuse is widespread, often not reported, and is responsible for many problems involving our youth today.
Just like with any person or animal, cells have a life-span. They live and die just like any other living thing. Basically what happens is they either “self-destruct,” or are killed by a harmful outside source, and the process by which cells die is called Apoptosis. Of these two ways, there are many different causes and factors that play roles in the death of cells. There are two main reasons why cells will commit suicide, (or go through, as it is also called, Programmed Cell Death.) and there are many different factors that help cells “decide” to commit suicide. There are three different ways that a cell can commit suicide. Some cancerous viruses have ways of preventing Apoptosis from happening. When someone gets sick, the body uses Apoptosis to get rid of the bad cells. There are very few genetic mutations that occur that affect Apoptosis but when one does, in all cases the person affected is afflicted by autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome or ALPS. Apoptosis can even occur in plants, although they have the ability to “turn it on and off” (Apoptosis).

Child abuse consists of any act or failure to act that endangers a child’s physical or emotional health and development. A person caring for a child is abusive if he or she fails to nurture the child, physically injures the child, or relates sexually to the child (Robins). Child abuse is broken down into four major categories: physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect. Aside from the abuse itself, the cost of the tragic events costs the United States billions of dollars each year. Every day, approximately 4 children in the United States die resulting from child abuse and the majority are under 5-years-old (Fromm). There are many organizations that promote preventative measures in reducing child abuse. If nothing is done, child abuse will continue to rise with many consequences in the future.
“Journalism is not a crime,” (Echeverria 1) several journalists are protesting against government censorship of the media; journalists see that they are having lack of freedom when they write. Journalists can no longer write with liberty, the government restricts them. In many cases, governments punish journalists when they write against them. For example, nowadays Venezuela is in a critical situation due to the poor management of the government. Several journalists have been arrested for trying to communicate to the world about what is going on in Venezuela. The government made the decision to not give them paper so they are not able to write. At the same time, the government is not just affecting journalists; the situation has also forced the closure of various media outlets. Several journalists have claimed by the scarcity of paper, but there has not been any solution for this problem.
In every cell within an organism, the most crucial question is to survive or to die. In life, cell death is required so as to allow normal function. Cell death can be either physiological or programmed, in a process known as apoptosis. Cells that undergo apoptosis generally produce a wide range of morphological changes. These changes include shrinkage of cell, membrane blebbing, chromatin condensation and nuclear fragmentation. Apoptosis occurs due to the presence of a family known as the caspases. Apoptotic cells are then cleared by phagocytosis in vivo, where phagocytes swallow up the dying cells and digest them. [1]
