A Brief Discussion of the the ideal of equality. No one is born a slave. Slaves are made by people declaring to own others. How can one truly own another’s life though? Surely all men are created equal; the United States’
Declaration of Independence, written by a Thomas Jefferson, even says “ We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal” Declaration of Independence (US 1776). Yet Mr. Jefferson owned many slaves, how could a man who fought for equality with his words, show the exact opposite idea with his actions? To fully understand the mindset of the owners of slaves, historians and readers must be willing to put themselves into the shoes of slave owners to see what truly sparked the slave owning craze. This article discusses on how abolishing slavery and freeing all slaves was unjust and cruel to the slaves. The article goes on about a former slave from Boston who could not find work and has been cheated by many so called Abolitionists. The slave supposedly says that he would like to be a slave again if it meant having work and food again. This article tries to show the positives of slavery and why it is a good thing. Many people of today would dismiss this article but it is very important for it lets current readers and historians get a glimpse into the minds of slave owners and pro-slavery
Many slaves did nothing to deserve being slaves other than being born the “wrong” color. As Jacobs mentioned throughout her book, she was just a woman who wanted freedom. Who would deny someone the comfort of freedom and security. As mentioned before the slave owners did not know the severity of their actions, but was that from ignorance, or from arrogance? The latter is most likely the correct answer and the more terrifying
