In the essay “The hypocrisy of puritanism” written by Anarchist political theorist Emma Goldman, she discuss how Puritan beliefs have been the foundation and possibly the starting point for contemporary American society. She argues puritanism had destroyed art and culture by trying to demonize the people who did the action. Goldman claims that Puritanism is a virus can spread extremely quickly. The puritans were founded by a group of activist who were banished under Elizabeth the first. Puritans played a vital role in England’s history of development. The English first civil war was actually dubbed the “Puritan Revolution” which was led by Samuel Rawson Gardiner in the 19th century. In the beginning puritans were extremely restricted by English laws by limiting how much influence they had on the teaching of religion. However through being hated in England soon their beliefs spread all over Europe through immigration. Congregations went to Netherlands and soon planted its seed in New England in North America. One of the main reasons this extreme and often dreaded religion didn’t die out was the fact that they had influence in the growing commercial world. Puritans believed that each person had his/her own responsibility to her God. Not through some bishop or man of God but advocated direct responsibility for your own actions. Puritans believed that when you are born you are a sin. You must have an intense relationship with god so that you may redeem yourself. God had chosen to reveal salvation through preaching and that untimely the Holy Spirit is your path way to salvation/heaven. Ultimately that everything that brings joy to your life would be considered a sin since you should commit your life to make your creator believe that you are a worthy human
