The atomic bomb is a fission bomb. This bomb is created by the joining and splitting of the atoms of heavy metals like plutonium. (ea.Grolier.com) This is the type of bomb the U.S. used in World War II. With a destructive power unmatched at the time, this bomb was equal to about one million times the power of T.N.T. The bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima destroyed the entire city and killed about 100,000 people upon impact.
Today's intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) carry one or more multiple, independently targeted reentry vehicles (MIBVs), each with its own nuclear war head. Billions of dollars are wasted in taxes, each year, to pay for nuclear weapons (Rosenberg 1). The United States has spent about... ... middle of paper ... ...tructive. Anyone with the experiences of World War II behind them would not want to repeat the horror of that. Even before the nuclear bomb had been perfected, world war had become spectacularly costly and destructive, killing over fifty million people world wide (Cameron 66).
Though the Cold War had many different aspects during the stockpiling of weapons, the most influential was the invention of nuclear weapons. Nuclear Weapons research started in the United States with the creation of the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project was started when a scientist from the UK came to the United States with the idea of creating a new, more powerful bomb. The first test was done in Alamogordo, New Mexico on July 16, 1945. This test showed the world that we had new technology that could be extremely dangerous for our enemies.

Introduction The development and usage of the first atomic bombs has caused a change in military, political, and public functionality of the world today. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki revolutionized warfare by killing large masses of civilian population with a single strike. The bombs’ effects from the blast, extreme heat, and radiation left an estimated 140,000 people dead. The bombs created a temporary resolution that lead to another conflict. The Cold War was a political standoff between the Soviet Union and the United States that again created a new worldwide nuclear threat.
Plutonium and uranium are used to create fission. The atoms fused are those of the isotopes of hydrogen, deuterium or tritium. The fusion and fission from a thermonuclear weapon result in large amounts of radiation that can be fatal to humans and animals and can also cause many other effects. Short-term physical effects One short-term effect of a nuclear war would, of course, be the deaths of millions of people. It has been estimated that an attack on U.S. populations centers by 100 one-megaton nuclear weapons would kill up to 20 percent of the population immediately through blast, heat, ground shock, and instant radiation effects.
Was it moral to drop the atomic bombs on Japan to save American soldier lives? No, the problems created from the bomb far outweigh the gains because of the number of lives lost, it made the surrounding land uninhabitable, and caused birth defects in future generations. One of the more immediate effects of the atomic bomb was its ability to kill thousands in seconds and more over time. The blast, heat, and radiation from the Hiroshima bomb killed anything within a 20 mile radius. Killing 140,000 people on impact and a additional 10,000 more over weeks from radiation poisoning.

In 1942 Enrico Fermi brought about first nuclear reaction with isotope Uranium 235. From this the Manhattan Project was brought about and took place in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Then July 16, 1945 near Alamogordo, New Mexico world's first atomic bomb was set off.

According to Merriam-Webster, nuclear fission is defined as “the splitting of an atomic nucleus resulting in the release of large amounts of energy” (Nuclear Fission). In the book Remembering the Manhattan Project: Perspectives on the Making of the Atomic Bomb and Its Legacy, Richard Rhodes, an American journalist and historian, states that fission was essentially discovered by accident. On December 21, 1938, German physicists, Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassman, were performing an experiment in which they bombarded uranium atoms with neutrons (Rhodes 17). They saw that this procedure created mutated atoms that had strange characteristics. Hahn and Strassman found that the neutrons split the nuclei of the uranium in half producing radioactive barium and krypton (Rhodes 18).
