In the story of “The House on Mango Street” the story is narrated by Cisneros which she tells the story in first person. She focused on her day to day activities throughout her life. Through the story, she talks less of herself and more about the people around her, where she starts to tell her imagination of the different houses. The setting of this story is taken place in a poor Latino neighborhood in Chicago, where the period is over a year in each house. In this story, we find out that the narrator struggles to find her place in her new neighborhood and most importantly in the world. So, it starts off the narrator and her family has moved to a poor, mostly Latino neighborhood in a city that’s commonly known for as Chicago. But it wasn’t the dream house but it would do. It was small with some features that she didn’t ask for. She states that its “red with tight steps in front and windows so small you’d think they were holding their breath” (Cisneros 518). She believes she states this because it’s an older house, so it’s going to have some flaws. When her mama and papa would talk about their dream home they wanted a front yard, and this home of theirs did not have that. And they wanted stairs, but she states that there are stairs but not the kind of stairs she wanted, they were simple hallway stairs. In conclusion, “The House on Mango Street” was not at all the dream house they had always dreamed off, but to them, it was a house they had for themselves. Her mama and papa had big dreams for this nice house and once they finally found one it let the kids down. They had their hearts set on something and finally, in the end, resorts they didn’t get it. They got something that was not as nice but finally, they were going to stay in one spot for at least over a
