What’s Hidden Between the Lines? In The Hound of Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the reader can tell a lot about the characters and their relationships just through the dialogue alone. Sherlock Holmes is dominant, or the alpha, and plays the master role when it comes to working with his apprentice, John Watson. Watson plays the obedient apprentice who wants to make his master proud. The dialogue allows the readers to see what the author did not blatantly state. Through solely analyzing the dialogue, the readers are able to learn more and more in depth than the reader would by only initially reading the book. I believe you have eyes in the back of your head.” “I have at least, a well-polished, silver-plated coffee-pot in front of me,” (Doyle, 1) In the first line Watson is amazed by the fact that Holmes was able to figure out what was in Watson’s hand even though his body was turned. But then makes the snarky remark that he just has a well-polished pot which points out some of his personality. He will not admit something that he is not capable of. By doing this he is showing that he cannot do everything that he is still human. Watson states “I will come, with pleasure,” said I. “I do not know how I could employ my time better.” (Doyle, 34). This statement alone shows that he is willing to do whatever and go wherever Holmes wanted. However, you do see that Watson truly does enjoy being with Holmes it makes him think of situations in a different way. For example, what we would think is a simple scratch on the floor could be so much more significant to the eyes of Holmes and Watson. In a way you can say that without Holmes, Watson would be bored and probably wasting his life away dealing with less important things. However, the excitement and joy you see in this statement you can assume the Watson will stay by Holmes side and continue on their adventure. Not only does Watson continue to follow Holmes he is starting to get just as excited about the unique opportunity they have stumbled upon.
