The Hobo (Hobbit) Chapter 20 As King under the mountain, Dain was constantly hearing more heroic duties Bilbo had fulfilled with the help of his magical ring. Overtime Dain grew very fond of Bilbo, but also very wicked and jealous of this ring. He desired for it, he craved for it; he was desperate for it. So he hosted a grand feast hoping that the Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, would come over so he could get ahold of his magical ring somehow. After sending the invitations to everyone, Dain thought of ways to bribe Bilbo into handing over the ring. It wasn’t easy for Dain knew how much the ring meant to Bilbo, so he had to come up with the most cunning ideas. Unfortunately Dwarves weren’t very good at that, due to them being so thick skulled. At the night of the feast Dain waited on a porch beside the giant gates that led to the dining hall. Finally the last one to step in with his rotten hairy feet, Bilbo Baggins! The Hobbit This hobbit was a hobbit, and his name was Baggins. Baggins had lived in the neighborhood of ”The Hill” some time, and people considered them very respectable, not only because most or them were rich, but also because they never had any adventures or did anything unexpected. You could tell what a Baggins would say on any question without the bother of asking him. This is a story of how a Baggins had an adventure, and found himself doing and saying things altogether unexpected. He may have lost the neighbors’ respect, but he gained- well, you will see what he gained in the end.
One of the recurring themes throughout The Hobbit is Tolkien’s manifestation of morality through his inherently good and evil characters. Although, some characters narrowly balance the line of good and evil through portraying characteristics such as greed, the hobbits represent naturally altruistic and peaceful characters. The protagonist Bilbo’s rational nature and willingness to compromise through his selfless transfer of the Arkenstone to Bard and the Elvenking further highlights Tolkien’s portrayal of a simple and sensible twentieth century Englishmen in a fantastical setting. Even though he risks his promised sum of the treasures, Bilbo chooses to work as a peacekeeper to opt for a more sensible way of solving a problem. Therefore, the dialogue between Bilbo, Bard, and the Elevenking is a manifestation by Tolkien of the moral high ground of hobbits and their rational and peacekeeping nature, which impresses the men and elves to award their trust and honor to the hobbit.
In the beginning, Bilbo is very abject to go on this adventure. “Don’t be a fool, Bilbo Baggins!” He said to himself, “Thinking of dragons and all that outlandish nonsense...”
He figures out that they are Trolls! They roast mutton over an open fire. Bilbo then sees a wallet. The wallet is a humongous one. Bilbo thinks the Dwarves would be so proud if he pocketed it.
Bilbo’s first test begins with the company losing their ponies due to trolls and him attempting to rescue them. The dwarves end up captured and he uses his quick thinking to delay the trolls until the sun rises. This is his first trail with the company which begins their bond for the rest of the movie, though his mentor Gandalf does not show up till the very end to help. As they continue their journey, Bilbo faces Gollum, another enemy, and defeats him in a battle that leaves Bilbo with a magic ring. The magic ring is a helpful object in this movie, as it allows him to disappear from danger and having possession of it allows Bilbo to help save the company multiple times. One of those times is when the company tries to fight off giant spiders and all but Bilbo end up captured by mean-spirited Mirkwood elves. Bilbo spends weeks using the ring to sneak around the dungeon and later figures out an escape plan for them. Though the hobbit does come with a lot of trails and enemies, it also provides the group tons of allies. They found allies in Beorn a bear shape-shifter that feeds them and allows them to stay at his home for a while, the Rivendell elves who throw them a feast, and the giant eagles who save them from being killed. In fact, when they were in the tunnels with the goblins, the dwarfs did not even notice when Bilbo became lost, and they were about to go on without him. Also, they always relied on Bilbo to get them out of trouble. Just like they were almost killed by the spiders and Bilbo came to their rescue, they made Bilbo go into the secret tunnel because everyone else feared Smaug, the dragon. The book begins with Bilbo Baggins celebrating his one hundred and eleventh birthday. Many "Hobbits" show up at his party including his third cousin, Frodo, which is the main character of the novel and a powerful wizard named Gandalf. Biblo possed a powerful ring known as the "Ruling Ring" which gives "Supreme Power" to whoever has possession of it.
