A prominent organization affiliated with these civil rights issues is Black Lives Matter. Also known as BLM, Black Lives Matter was founded in the summer of 2013 and stimulated by the shooting of a black suspect, Trayvon Martin, by a white neighborhood watch, George Zimmerman. BLM uses social media to campaign against violence toward African-Americans. Protests are frequently arranged around inequality, racial profiling, and the killings of black people by law enforcement by the United States criminal justice system.

History reports that as many as 300,000 people traveled to participate in the march and that observers estimated 75% - 80% of the marchers were black. The march was one of the largest political non-violent protests for human rights in the United States history. Not only was it one of the largest, it was one of the most powerful movements by an African-American society. This twitter hashtag turned into a massive movement that has opened up America’s eyes and has given us evidence for all the things that African Americans have been through for centuries. Now that everyone has a camera phone and some form of social media we are able to get these incidents on video and the world can know in seconds. It started off as a hashtag to get justice for the death of Trayvon Martin but has slowly progressed into protests and marches to get justice for all African Americans and the injustices we face. The Black Lives Matter Movement protests against the planned violence and racism that oppresses black communities across the United States of America and in other countries. Black Lives Matter started in 2012 after the state of chaos caused by the Trayvon Martin case. George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer murdered 17-year-old Trayvon Benjamin Martin, in Sanford, Florida.

Zimmerman was found not guilty in a court of law, and Martin ended up becoming tried by his actions posthumously without any justification (Black Lives Matter, n.d.). As of 2016, in America four black men are killed by police for every white man of the same cause, when population is taken into account (NPR). The rise in awareness about police brutality has lead to the formation of movements against it. The most well-known of these is Black Lives Matter, a group whose goal is to improve the lives of black people in America. This organization sparked the creation of two other groups; All Lives Matter (ALM), who believe that Black Lives Matter (BLM) doesn’t stand for complete equality, and Blue Lives Matter, who support police officers.
