Facebook (originally known as The Facebook) was founded by Mark Zuckerberg, a Harvard student, in January 2004 as a way to contact other students that attend Harvard University. After finishing the website, Zuckerberg told a few friends about this website and one friend suggested he send it to the three hundred people on the Kirkland House online mailing list. Through the next 24 hours an estimated amount of about 1,200-1,500 students had “joined Facebook”, which grew to more than half the Universities’ undergraduate population within a month. By March 2004 Facebook had expanded to students at Stanford, Columbia, and Yale, eventually expanding all Ivy League and Boston-area schools and gradually reaching universities in Canada and the United States. After purchasing the domain name facebook.com in 2005 for $200,000 the company dropped the ‘The’ from the name.
