Pompeii is an ancient Roman city located just one mile away from Mount Vesuvius, an active volcano in the Gulf of Naples, Italy. In 79 A.D., the eruption of Vesuvius blanketed Pompeii and other nearby towns with several feet of volcanic ash. While other Roman cities and mediterranean cultures of the First Century AD continued to thrive and evolve, with the result that little of their historical artistic treasures and traditions were preserved over time, Pompeii remained undisturbed, unreachable by thieves, settlers, and art collectors. Consequently, Pompeii offers a particularly intimate insight into the lives of its residents and the artistic traditions of early Rome. Archeologists have been investigating the area for many years now and have learned quite a bit about the characteristic architecture and art of the era and of the region. Pompeii serves as an excellent example of the attempts of Romans to make structures look like something they were not.
