The Hi-Tech Industry
Over the last twenty years the hi-tech industry has gained a foothold
in Cambridge, as it has all around Britain. Cambridge University
decided to set up a Science Park in the north of the city. A Science
Park has a distinct difference from a business or industrial park, in
that it is more research orientated, rather than production and
commercially based.
=====================================================================
Some examples of companies that have set up in the Science Park in
recent years are:
==================================================================
-Napp Laboratories
-Cell Systems Ltd
-Pafra
-Intervet
The main types of companies that set up in the Science Park are:
-Chemicals 32%
-Instrument 20%
-Electrical engineering 20%
-Business Services 12%
-Professional Services 12%
-Manufacturing 4%
Cambridge Science Park has grown from one company in 1973 occupying a
space of 1395m2, to 69 firms in 1988 occupying a space of 69285m2. The
University has carefully controlled this growth so as not to overwhelm
the local environment, including the Greenbelt.
The transport links to the Science Park are very good, such as the A14
and the M11, and that is one of the reasons for its massive growth.
The Science Park does not have it's own exit on to the A14, which
contributes large amounts of traffic to the top end of Milton road.
The Science Park was the idea of Dr. John Bradfield, a professor from
Trinity College. He saw 'Silicon Valley' in America and decided to
build one along the same lines in Cambridge, and this has now been
called 'Silicon Fen'. This was built on a disused area of land to the
north of the city, this land was owned by Trinity College.
The building of the Science Park was carefully managed so as not to
allow it to grow out of control, this was done by opening it in five
stages, the last being opened in 1990. This allows companies to extend
their current properties; this was taken up by Napp pharmaceuticals
In this analysis includes a summary of the characters and the issues they are dealing with, as well as concepts that are seen that we have discussed in class. Such as stereotyping and the lack of discrimination and prejudice, then finally I suggest a few actions that can be taken to help solve the issues at hand, allowing the involved parties to explain their positions and give them a few immersion opportunities to experience their individual cultures.
In the novel, 1984 by George Orwell, Winston Smith, the main character, is in world full of technology. There is a telescreen that watches and hear everything you do. Big Brother posters are everywhere on the street and in building .The police are involved in everything too. Everything you do has to be Big Brothers way, including how you speak. The Party controls what you believe, if someone does something wrong, that person is vaporized or tortured in the Ministry of love, a place with no windows and no darkness. And if everyone knows that that person has been vaporized and the Party says they haven’t been vaporized, you have to believe that they didn’t and if you say otherwise, then you get vaporized as well. The Ministry of Truth writes the newspapers and says what the Party says. The Ministry of Peace focuses on war with Eastasia and Eurasia, they say that they are in war and bomb their own cities and tell the people that they are in war. The Ministry of Plenty looks after economic affairs in Oceania. Everything in Oceania is being watched or listened by Big Brother.
According to the Aristocracy of Manufacturers, which from Democracy in America, Tocqueville mainly discussed about how scientific manufactures bring people to the aristocracy. He separately discussed about potential harms of division of labor, and the differences between the new aristocracy and the old one. In his mind, division of labor expends the rank between the workers and masters, because work men only pay attrition on the specific work processes, which limit their views and thinking abilities, but masters consider extensive production view more than workers, which makes masters control more social capital. This phenomenon tends to the new aristocracy. In addition, he argued that this new aristocracy is different between the old one, because the relationship between the masters and workers are built by the benefits, which means masters only pay workers for producing goods, and masters have no responsibility to workers out of the working hours. In the old aristocracy, workers belong to the masters. Masters have responsibility to workers’ lives.
The United States has come to a point where a person cannot go for very long without being greeted with some sort of advertisement. Advertisements are everywhere, no matter how secluded of a life someone may live. They appear on most web pages of the Internet, show up on cellphones during applications, and are plastered along roadways. It has become second nature for most people to tune out the advertisements that are thrown in their faces at practically every turn. Our country is especially ridden with advertisements compared to others, as it has become a multi-billion industry for the country. Fueled by a materialistic frame of mind, the population’s desire for the latest product keeps the advertising field thriving.
In George Orwell’s novel 1984, it is evident that the notorious Big Brother is always watching the every move of the citizens of Oceania. Although United States citizens today may not have telescreens or an organization such as the Thought Police, there is still a relevant connection to the dystopian society to present day America.
The video game industry has become a huge influence on society and the economy today. It is an industry that is so huge that it is estimated that 70% of U.S homes will own a Video game system by the year 2005, (Cassandra, 2002) Just one year away. But what made it the way it is? Since it is still an industry it has to follow the natural laws of economics. In this paper we will dive into the industry that now has gone beyond movies and recordings in profit.
The world we live in has changed dramatically over the last thirty years with the invention of the internet, smart phones, and video gaming systems. The world we live in now was unimaginable and the technology advances we have made are remarkable. Video game consoles and how we as a society play them has changed dramatically since the beginning of gaming in the 1970’s. Over the last decade there have been many arguments concerning video games such as too much violence, obesity, addiction, social wellbeing, and many other health related issues. Video games also have some advantages to include hand eye coordination, a strategic mind set, educational and teach life lessons to the players. However, video games do cause more harm than good because the negative outcomes out weight the positive aspects of playing video games.
Improvements in agriculture, transportation, and communication between 1790 and 1860 were the stepping stones for a greater America. From the cotton gin, to the steamboat, to the telegraph, new innovations were appearing all over. America had finally begun to spread its wings and fly.
American society changed tremendously from the birth of the Factory System to the 21st century. The factory system was first introduced in the 1400s and has developed in the centuries that has come ahead. It changed many of the industries and made the work force much easier. Some of the changed factors were the assembly line and how gender roles were affected, age in the work force changed. As well as that the food, clothes and automotive industry increasingly became more mobile and time consuming. This led to the contributions on the creation of the Twentieth and Twenty First Centuries. American society changed tremendously by the work force and the effect that
The video gaming industry has come a long way from the first home based gaming system since the Magnavox Odyssey. Through the decades, the video game industry has rapidly improved the technology to home gaming, and made arcades nonexistence. The major video gaming titans of today are Nintendo, Microsoft Xbox, and Sony Playstation. These three have been in war with each other the past ten years, and neither show signs of defeat. However the two leading competitors of high sales in the gaming industry are Microsoft Xbox and Sony Playstation. Both developers have been head to head on technological advancements and consumer marketing. Sony uses their advanced design of game console and their secrecy of their project to entice consumers. Microsoft however tries to direct their marketing strategy towards consumers themselves. With different marketing planning, both companies still show success. Sony and Microsoft’s entire production unit were sold out when they were released at their release date.
The Silicon Valley area became a major manufacturing power after World War II. The Cold War furthered this development, as industries involved in defense, aerospace, steel, oil, automobiles, and so on prospered (Hossfeld 405-406). The high-technology industry began in the laboratories of corporations such as Bell Laboratories, American Telephone and Telegraph, Fairchild Camera and Instrument, and General Electric during this Cold War era (Bacon, “Organizing”). Employment in California, especially Silicon Valley, grew rapidly between 1950 and 1980 due to technical innovation that characterized the postwar prosperity. Furthermore, federal spending expanded California’s economy, placing it in the front of a high-technology revolution (Hossfeld 405). Politicians such as the former President Clinton and Vice President Gore consider the Silicon Valley the model for the United States industrial growth in the new millennium. While this “model” has had remarkable products and performance, it also employs underpaid workers in unsafe environments (Siegel 91). Moreover, unlike most manufacturing industries in the United States, the high-tech workers are not organized into unions.
Cell phone manufacturers and service providers are at the core of the cell phone industry. These corporations are integral from their research and development endeavors to interactions with the consumer and the marketing of new products. The companies that control such factors of cellular phones are very numerous, so it is difficult to address all the cell phone manufacturers and service providers. However, we have focused largely on only the most significant cellular companies namely in the U.S. marketplace, although many have global ties. Collectively, companies around the world have the same goals in mind – to create desirable cutting-edge technology and to increase consumer satisfaction with hopes of generating sales, and thus profits.
Strategic planning implies establishing in advance what an individual or organization wants to achieve within a specified timeframe and deriving ways on how to achieve that. A strategic plan is basically a course of action that is used to attain desired results. It means anticipating the future and having measures on how to grow into the future. Technology is a macroeconomic factor that is rapidly growing and changing. Technology has had positive effects all over across the globe to business organization and to individuals.
Science is everywhere; you always see it in every day life. Like when you get a ride to school from your parents, watch TV, talk on the phone, and listen to music, that’s using science. When you pass buildings science was used to build them.
The technology revolution is upon us. In recent years there have been many triumphs in technology. Now more than ever, people are able to communicate over thousands of miles with the greatest of ease. Wireless communication is much to thank for the ease of communication. What used to take weeks threw mail, now takes seconds over the Internet. But just like any revolution there are social consequences, especially when the revolution takes place around the globe. Since the world does not evolve at the same pace, lesser developed countries as well as minorities in developed countries have not even come close to reaping the benefits of a world connected at the touch of a button. The social argument is that as this revolution proceeds, the gap between the haves and have-nots will widen to the point of ill repute. Others argue that because of technological advances the world is a much better place. This seems to be the debate at hand.
