The movie I chose to watch and analyze for this exam is a movie called Odd Thomas. This movie is an odd movie to choose, but it follows the pattern of the hero’s journey in odd way. Odd Thomas is about a man from California who is named Odd Thomas; he has this strange ability to see dead people. However, he is just a part-time cook at a little diner. He uses this gift that he has, as a super hero would consider an “undercover detective,” to help the police solve heinous crimes that were committed by bad people. Life seems to be going well until what is referred to as bodachs enter the diner where Odd works at. These creatures are a sign of destruction or something horrible is going to happen. Then out of nowhere a strange guy who Odd and his girlfriend Stormy say look like “fungus” enters and the bodachs take a very high interest in this guy. Odd knows there is something that is not right about this guy and he investigates, not knowing his world is about to change. The Hero’s journeys most typically start out as the deity or hero does not know they have this special gift, such as Hercules the Disney version, when Hercules finds out he is actually a god and not human. Unfortunately, with Odd he wins and he loses at the same time. He saves the town from this massive catastrophe but he loses the one he loves, Stormy. However, no one told Odd that Stormy was killed by the armed gun men because it would have been one too many wounds that day. Odd heals from the wounds he had sustained, having to go on with life without Stormy. “If I am able to live an average life span… that could be around sixty years till I see Stormy again… but I am a patient man”
In movies, novels, and life, people are named as heroes. The heroes we establish and the heroes we recognize, however, may not meet the criteria for a mythic hero. A mythic hero ventures forth on his journey, and comes forth from the hero’s path to greatness. Joseph Campbell, a mythologist who studied many of the great human myths and religious tales, realized, in studying these myths and tales, that there were certain steps that every hero went through. Campbell called this “The Hero’s Journey”; it is based on Carl Jung's idea that all human beings have an archetype. After Campbell studied a lot of the great myths and realized this pattern, he published his findings in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Ever since then, authors have used “The Hero’s Journey” as an outline to tell their stories. “It is important to note that not all of these individual steps are present in every hero’s tale, nor is it important that they be in this exact order” (Vogler 20). The Hero with a Thousand Faces gives a sense of significance as it looks into the inner mind and soul. The author, Joseph Campbell, performs two extraordinary accomplishments: compelling his readers that myth and dream, those are the most effective and everlasting forces in life and a unification of mythology and psychoanalysis with a gripping narrative. One well-known example of “The Hero’s Journey” from popular culture is the Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, by J.K. Rowling. In the novel, Harry Potter, the main character, is the chosen one and “The Hero’s Journey” applies to his life from the moment he is attacked by He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named as a baby.
His observations of surrounding nature changes after a few ironic incidents occur. The role he plays reverses itself and he finds that he is merely a scared child who is lost and alone in a big scary world. While at Greasy Lake, he is involved in a terrible fight where he almost kills another person, and attempts the heinous crime of rape onto an innocent girl. As he begins to gang rape an innocent victim he is forced to run for his own safety when more people show up at the scene. Today a hero must have suffered challenges that make him grow as a better human.
“If the path before you is clear, you're probably on someone else's.” (Joseph Campbell). Every character walks through an astringent journey throughout their lifetimes. This journey can be viewed as the Hero’s Journey. Undertaking the journey of the hero can elevate the character achievement. The protagonist of The Catcher in the Rye--Holden Caulfield with no exception undergoes the journey. Holden’s journey ventures beyond what he is able to endure, forcing him into the unknown territory. Holden received the quest call to adventure, and responded to the call for the journey when he left Pencey prep school. Holden accepted the call, faced his challenges struggling through hardships and oppression, with helps from the guidance, he then eventually returned to his comfortable world with a tremendous intellect and physical transformation giving a closure to his journey.
This classic horror film starts in emergency ward of a hospital, where a crazy man is held in custody. They identify he as Miles Bennell, who tell the tail the events before his arrest. Bennell is a small town doctor ,who just came home from a convention. He soon realizes that many of his patience believe some of their loved ones are not himself. His former girlfriend Becky Driscoll also believes that her uncle is a imposter. Bennell asks Becky out on a date, but the are interrupted by his old friend Jack Belicec who found a underdeveloped body "pod person” in his basement. Following this Becky also finds a body in her cellar. The next day the bodies are gone , and they find duplicates of themselves emerging from large seed pods. They discover the bodies fully form if the fall a sleep. After trying the FBI they go to the next town to try and finds some answer. There the find the town is replaced by the pod people. They escape to the middle of the nowhere where Bennell in the only surveyor.
Randle Patrick McMurphy, the main character in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, is the perfect example of a hero. He is committed to a mental institution after faking insanity to get out of a work camp. From the beginning of his presence on the ward, things start to change. He brings in laughter, gambling, profanity and he begins to get the other patients to open up. All of this, however, clashes with the head nurse, Nurse Ratched, who is trying to press conformity and obeying authority. It is then a battle between McMurphy and the nurse, McMurphy trying to set the patients free and the nurse trying to make them “normal”.
In the film Hancock, Hancock is an archetypal hero because he follows the hero’s journey. Hancock is a vigilante superhero living in the outskirts of Los Angeles, California. His reckless ways cause the city of Los Angeles to essentially dislike the anti- hero. Hancock does more good for himself than he does for the city hence the “anti-hero”. He is disliked until he saves a man who links him to the journey of an archetypal hero.
Hundreds of thousands of books have been written throughout the Course of human history, each very different from another. It may seem that there are an infinite number of stories that can be told, most can all boil down to twelve simple points. These twelve points were outlined by Joseph Campbell in his book, The Hero With a Thousand Faces. These steps are: the ordinary world; call to adventure; refusal of the call; meeting with the mentor; crossing the threshold; tests, allies, and enemies; approach; the ordeal; reward; road back; resurrection; and return with elixir. The hero’s journey always begins and ends in a comfortable and familiar place, the ordinary world. During the course of their journey, the hero travels to a strange new place, or the special world. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is no exception to these rules, as the character Arthur Dimmesdale follows nearly all the steps of a true hero.
The difference between a superhero, as we know from movies and comics, and a traditional hero is rather unclear for many people.. In modern times, a superhero is often a being with supernatural abilities. For example, the movies depict them as individuals with super strength, night vision, the ability to climb walls, and so on. The majority of audiences have been spoiled with these unrealistic depictions and are unable to recall the real or “traditional” hero. This passage solidifies the theory of the Hero’s Journey that much further. Thomas Foster explains that every story is a quest, and every quest structurally consists of the same five things. There’s the quester, the destination, the reason to go, challenges on the trip there, and the real reason for the journey. He also explains there are other components to the quest that every story seems to have. There is the knight, the dangerous road, the “holy grail”, a dragon, an evil knight, and a princess. When one thinks about it, it’s a little hard to agree that every story is the same, but if each story is at it’s bare bones, they can be fairly similar. A tragic hero is defined as a person of high social rank, who has a tragic flaw or flaws that lead to their downfall. These heroes’ downfalls are usually either complete ruin or death. Tragic heroes face their downfall with courage and dignity. While many characters in Julius Caesar could fit these conditions, the person who fits the role of a tragic hero the best is Marcus Brutus. Brutus develops into a tragic hero throughout the play, and this is shown though his qualifications of a tragic hero, his high status, his tragic flaws, and his courage in the face of his death.
