This world has more than seven billion people, but not everyone is a hero. In an earlier life, there was a native american man named Natty Bumppo and he was considered an American hero. A hero is not something easy for a person to be, Natty Bumppo had done a lot of things and helped others; as a result, people made him a hero. Every person has different traits or characteristics that make them who they are, and the characteristics that belonged to Natty Bumppo made him an American hero. Strength and humanity are two of the characteristics of Natty Bumppo that made him a hero and those still exist for the hero’s traits today.
Strength is one of the important characteristics to expect in any hero, because if a person is strong then they can stand up for somebody else and help the weak person overcome something that they are struggling with. In the story “Last of the Mohicans”, Natty Bumppo had shown the characteristic of strength and stood up for somebody else. Natty helped one militia man to escape the fort so the man can go back home and protect his family from danger. Even though Natty knew helping the man escape was against the British Colonel’s wishes, he still successfully got the man out of the fort and danger through many difficulties. He did not regret helping the man escape but he felt good about it. As a result of what Natty had done, the British Colonel arrested him and ordered that Natty be hung to death but Natty was still strong and faced the punishments from the Colonel.
In heroic characteristics, there is a need for humanity, because if humanity is lacking, then a person would not care about anything. Natty Bumppo has human characteristic in many stories. For example, in chapter seven of the story called “The D...

...eone who was in need, even though,it put the helper in danger. Firefighter or soldiers are heroes because they fight for others and are in dangerous situations. Both of the traits are important to have for a person who is considered as a hero.
Two of the characteristics that make a person into a hero are strength and humanity and those traits are still showing in a heroes today. From the examples of Natty Bumppo, he was a very strong and human man. He helped people when he knew the punishment for him was death but he still did it. Natty did not like to hurt anyone because he felt like that was wrong to hurt any living things. Natty Bumppo was a nice young man, and his personality was already very human, which makes him an American Hero. Heroes today still have the traits like Natty Bumppo because without these traits, they could not help anyone through difficulties.
Recently, students of Olympian High School have stumbled upon the question, "What is a hero?" In the school's 2013 Young Minds Essay Contest, students are expected to consider universal concerns and ideas. Many times when people think of a hero, they think of Superman, Batman, and many other Marvel characters who display unattainable superpowers. However, heroes are prevalent throughout the world. A hero can be anyone who has the desire to help others, brave in dangerous situations, and does not look at exterior gain from helping others.
In many works of Literature, a character comes forth as a hero, only to die because of a character trait known as a tragic flaw; Hamlet from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Okonkwo from Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, and Winston Smith from Orwell’s 1984 all exhibit that single trait, which leads, in one way or another, to their deaths. These three tragic heroes are both similar and different in many ways: the way they die, their tragic flaws, and what they learn. All three characters strongly exhibit the traits needed to be classified as a tragic hero.
A hero can be anyone. The modern day hero does not need physical strength or have super human powers, nor do they need to be of royal decent or obtain a high-flying place in the government. Bernard Malamud explains, “Without heroes, we are all plain people, and don't know how far we can go,” suggesting that heroes are simply role-models we use to learn from. The first introduction to the concept of the Heroes Journey was through Joseph Campbell. In his book ‘A Hero with a Thousand Faces,’ he brings to light the idea of studying the human impulse to create stories that draw on universal themes which is highlighted in his theory of the Heroes Journey. He explains, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself,” which demonstrates the idea of portraying a hero as someone who gives without the need for repayment. Similarly the founder of analytical psychology, Carl Jung, talks about heroes in his essay ‘A Study in the Process of Individuation,’ through his concept of introversion and extraversion. According to him, archetypes are distinctive universal psychic temperaments, which form the substrate from which the basic themes of human life a...
“Go my children; remember the just chief of the palefaces, and clear your own tracks from briers!”(The Prairie; pg.123) The trapper, Natty Bumppo, is remembered as one of the greatest chief of all palefaces. He is represented as the good and bad of both cultures, which shows more concern for others than him. Natty, was a skilled warrior that no matter what the consequences were he was up for a challenge. In addition to Natty, he was a symbol to both the white and red skins. By the end of Natty’s life, he had accomplished uniting Indians and Whites. Whoever thought, Natty Bumppo who shows more concern for the holiness of life, be responsible, as a hunter and a fighter, for so many deaths.
When asking people about what characteristics they think of when they think of a hero the most common answers would be doing good deeds and not allowing evil to flourish. This is what we have been made to believe. One of the first images that come to mind when the word hero is mentioned is a superhero. An image of Batman or Superman is likely, one who is good natured and conquers evil as it appears. Just doing good deeds or not committing evil sins is not enough. First you would have to distinguish the difference between an evil and a good action. The line between good and evil is so thin that specific attributes and certain actions are constantly being exchanged back and forth. We cannot decide as a society what is good and what is evil. A modern day example would be when the United States made the decision to bomb Japan during World War II. For Americans celebration ensued as it was thought to be a decisive moment of victory. Those who were involved in t...
For many years the American Hero has filled the silver screen and wide screened television sets, along with shelves of countless bookstores. Audiences love to see the protagonist overcome great odds, defeat the forces of evil, and save the beautiful girl at the last second. The character of the American Hero however, is not a new idea. James Cooper, in the 1800’s, created the archetype of the American Hero. Natty Bumpo, also called Deerslayer, embodied many qualities of the great American Hero. Modern day heroes are simply following the example set by Cooper’s creation.
Although not every hero shouts “Avengers Assemble” before a worthy deed, heroism is shown in all aspects of the everyday world. Webster Dictionary has exactly 5 definitions under the word hero and still no two people explain heroism the same. Superman and Captain America are a glimpse of the fictional characters society titles a hero. Firefighters and Military portray heroism each day in the lives of every civilian. As Sullivan and Venter stated “individuals are referred to as ‘heroes’ for seemingly different reasons” and even through endless studies the adjectives referring heroes is ever changing. Among the various ideas of what it means to be a hero, boldness and valiance capture the essence of heroism.
Christopher McCandless is the ideal tragic hero because he had everything in the world but he gave it up to go on a two year trip into the wild and through his own actions he paid the ultimate price. McCandless had a goal to achieve in the wilderness but as Aristotle said “The tragic hero's powerful wish to achieve some goal inevitably encounters limits, usually those of human frailty.(Aristotle #2)”Although McCandless met his fate at the end of his journey the fact that he attempted this grand adventure makes him a hero rather than an imbecile.
Over the years, there have been many ideas of what a hero is. We all know the stories of superheroes like Batman, The Flash, Ironman, and The Incredible Hulk. Being a hero is more than being the strongest person around. There are everyday heroes that exist in our world. A hero can be anyone. Even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a young boy's shoulders to let him know that the world hadn't ended. A hero could be a young boy helping an elderly woman cross the road. There is no exception. There are heroes all over ther world. all different shapes, races, and sizes. Chinua Achebe tells us the tale of an unsung hero named Okonkwo who lives in an Ibo village in Nigeria. Achebe’s Things Fall Apart demonstrates how Okonkwo is a righteous hero by showing how he handles every event in the rise and fall of his life.
There are many facets that can either make or break someone as a “hero”. In literature, a hero does not necessarily have to be a knight in shining armor, a caped crusader, or an exact replica of the archetype but, there are certain qualities and expectations that determine what makes a hero. A typical hero has strength, appeal, courage, righteousness, and success, meaning that they have the physical and mental capabilities that can lead them to eventually achieve their goals. In most cases, the protagonist of a story is the hero, but this is not true in “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving. Set in Sleepy Hollow, the story chronicles schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane’s, time and sudden disappearance from the “haunted” town. Seemingly the “good guy” and hero of the story, it is made apparent that Ichabod is a man of many faults which undermine this surface assumption. Ichabod’s gangly and bird-like physique is the first indication that he is not cut out to be the triumphant hero. In the face of danger, a hero stands up with bravery while Ichabod shrinks back from mythical tales and superstitions. Likewise, the simple fact of being morally upright is challenged by Ichabod’s overwhelming greed. Affirming his lack of heroism is the story’s conclusion in which Ichabod’s overactive imagination was so prevalent that it clouded his sense of reality and caused his downfall and failure. In “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”, Ichabod Crane is shown to be an anti-hero through his mere physical description, cowardice and greed, and ultimately destructive imagination, all of which completely contradict the traits that make a true hero.
