"The Heart of Darkness" Critique

The Heart of Darkness provides answers to questions that the human race has been asking for centuries. What is really inside of my heart? How can I control these feelings? Why do I feel this way? The authors’ theory is that no matter how hard we try to hide it, emotions that we may not necessarily want are imprinted inside of us. What is different with his unique method of telling us this is what makes the story such a classic.

Joseph Conrad uses foils instead of the usual “antagonist vs. protagonist” plot. He focuses on the identities of others in order to bring out the best and worst in a character without naming a villain or hero. In this novella everyone has the potential of becoming the evil person that they see in each other. By demonstrating the darkness in all he allows us to see what’s truly on the inside of these people.
