In one’s lifetime, it is crucial for a person to maintain their health in order to live for a lifetime. In order to maintain that health that every single human body needs, people first need to realize why it is important and how health benefits us in our daily activities. As the World Health Organization puts it, “Better health is central to human happiness and well-being”. Although the body’s health is a combination of multiple factors, it is crucial to maintain all of those aspects, specially nutrition, in order to live a well balanced life. Nutrition plays a major role in one’s health. The body gets its nutrition or fuel through the kinds of food and drinks someone consumes. Nutrition is strongly the best factor of building up bone structure. Children’s bones and adult’s bones are completely different as they grow and heal at opposite rates. As children are rapidly growing on a day to day basis, so are their bones. Teenagers at the age of eighteen or nineteen, will reach about 95% of their total bone growth, and will keep growing into the mid-twenties as each person varies. By the age of thirty, bone growth stops as the decay starts and thus the reason most adults in their thirties do not feel as healthy as before. On the other hand, “If we’re well-nourished, then our bones remodel themselves robustly” (Andrews). The recipe for healthy bones is a well balanced diet if whole, fresh foods, with exercise. Without calcium, bones would be nonexistent. Although bones contain 99% of the body’s calcium, it is not enough to build a strong skeleton alone, Vitamin D is also used. Being one of the leading countries in Health technology and also in food and beverage leaves most people choosing between living a healthy lifestyle and indulging in the varieties of food we offer. Across the country, many people are living with pre-existing conditions, living in food deserts, living below the poverty line and a long list of other factors that either hinders them from eating healthy or force them to eat healthily. When trying to live a healthy lifestyle in this country not only does the promotion of prevention matter, but also the promotion of Career and job opportunities matter just as much. In the United States, Money equals Power and money also equal the opportunity to create and live a healthier lifestyle.
Now, when considering whether one wants to prevent or treat Osteoporosis, it does not mean cutting yourself off from foods with small portions or extreme dieting. It is a common misconception that when a person wants to be healthy they must eat in smaller portions, and while this does have some truth, one must consider when it comes to eating healthy, it means to eat healthy by adding nutritious portions of fruits, vegetables, protein, carbs, and of course, calcium intake for the bones in one’s diet. Also, one must not deprive themselves of having a “cheat day” once a week with chips and candy. But it is a good start to begin adding calcium to fortified foods and supplements, such as milk. People should at least aim for 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams a day of calcium.
Again, a diet that is rich in calcium and vitamin D is essential to prevent bones from becoming thin and brittle, thus making them easier to facture. If consuming the proper vitamins and nutrients becomes difficult, a variety of dietary supplements can be useful to ensure recommended daily intake. According a research study, it is more cost effective to recommend these two dietary supplements to the elderly because if doctors treat early onset osteoporosis with calcium and vitamin D, by the time these same elderly individuals reach the age of 80, the cost of treatment is much more cost effective. Those that receive no type of treatment for early onset osteoporosis are more prone to factures, internal injuries due to fractures, and hospitalization costs with pain medication increase for the elderly by the time they reach 80. Healthy People 2020 is a program for the promotion of health and the prevention of diseases, launched by the Department of Health and Human Services in December 2010. According to healthypeople.gov, this program has four overarching goals which are first to achieve healthy, longer lives free of preventable diseases, injuries, and premature deaths; to achieve health fairness, eliminate differences, and improve all groups’ health; also to produce social and physical environments that encourage good health; and last but not least to promote life’s quality, healthy development, and healthy behaviors through all life stages. This program has a vision of a community where people live long, healthy lives. Healthy People 2020 offers a comprehensive set of 10 years of nationwide goals and objectives that is meant to improve the health of the American population. Healthy People 2020 covers 42 topic areas with approximately 600 objectives, which include 1,200 measures. A smaller set of Healthy People 2020 objectives, has been designated to communicate high-priority health issues and actions that can be taken to address them, this objectives are called Leading Health Indicators. The program goes above and beyond these health indicators in order to provide the best care for the people of this country. These indictors cover from the access of health service, nutrition, physical activity, and obesity to substance abuse, environmental quality, injury and violence.
When thinking of my overall health, a few aspects stand out that I think I could definitely improve on. When I think my current personal wellness I think it is fairly decent. There are definitely people out there far worse than myself. It could be better because there is always room for improvement. I’m a big fan of personal growth. To me if a person decides to stop growing or wanting to better themselves either mentally, physically or emotiontally. Then whats the real purpose for living? I am a fairly active person. I love to hike, stay fit and eat healthy. Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t hard for me which I think definitely contributes to a wellness.
A good complete physical health is often interpreted as taking in a good source of nutrient DRI, 5-a-day and regular exercising but this is far from it as other factors can contribute to it. It can also aid in giving you more energy, as well as helping you sleep better. Another advantage to keeping a healthy life style is you'll be stronger, and feel better about the way your body feels. Despite the overly expensive food or the pricey monthly bills from the gym you hardly go too, simple steps can assist you in living a long healthy life without the extra effort.
Any individual that leads a healthy lifestyle will say that healthy living is more than just a fad or goal, it’s a way of life.
