It is the year 2081. Because of Amendments 211, 212, and 213 to the Constitution, every American is fully equal, meaning that no one is stupider, uglier, weaker, or slower than anyone else. The Handicapper General and a team of agents ensure that the laws of equality are enforced.
One April, fourteen-year-old Harrison Bergeron is taken away from his parents, George and Hazel, by the government. George and Hazel aren’t fully aware of the tragedy. Hazel’s lack of awareness is due to average intelligence. In 2081, those who possess average intelligence are unable to think for extended stretches of time. George can’t comprehend the tragedy because the law requires him to wear a radio twenty-four hours a day. The government broadcasts noise over these radios to interrupt the thoughts of intelligent people like George.
Hazel and George are watching ballerinas dance on TV. Hazel has been crying, but she can’t remember why. She remarks on the prettiness of the dance. For a few moments, George reflects on the dancers, who are weighed down to counteract their gracefulness and masked to counteract their good looks. They have been handicapped so that TV viewers won’t feel bad about their own appearance. Because of their handicaps, the dancers aren’t very good. A noise interrupts George’s thoughts. Two of the dancers onscreen hear the noise, too; apparently, they are smart and must wear radios as well.
Hazel says she would enjoy hearing the noises that the handicappers dream up. George seems skeptical. If she were Handicapper General, Hazel says, she would create a chime noise to use on Sundays, which she thinks would produce a religious effect. Defying gravity, they move through the air, flying thirty feet upward to the ceiling, which they kiss. Then, still in the air, they kiss each other.
Diana Moon Glampers comes into the studio and kills Harrison and the empress with a shotgun. Training the gun on the musicians, she orders them to put their handicaps on. The Bergerons’ screen goes dark. George, who has left the room to get a beer, returns and asks Hazel why she has been crying. She says something sad happened on TV, but she can’t remember exactly what. He urges her not to remember sad things. A noise sounds in George’s head, and Hazel says it sounded like a doozy. He says she can say that again, and she repeats that it sounded like a doozy.
It's the year 2081 and there are three new amendments added to the constitution that made American fully equal in every aspect. The 211, 212, and 213 were the amendment that were added to the constitution. George and Hazel Bergeron have a son named Harrison who was taken away at the age of fourteen years old. George Bergeron was a very intelligence person, so for people like him they had a radio set in their ear. There is a little sound wave that go off sometimes to delay their thought process. His wife on the other hand was not handicap because she was not above average like her husband. One night in 2018, the Bergerons are sitting in front of the TV watching ballet, with ballerinas wearing masks to hide their beauty and weights to hold back their grace and strength. The Ballet is interrupted when one of the ballerinas has a serious government news announcement to make. The news was about Harrison Bergeron who has escaped and is one his way to the ballet show! He rips off the door to the stage and storms on screen. He declares himself Emperor and takes one of the ballerinas as his Empress. At the beginning of the story we are introduced to George and Hazel who are an ordinary couple that consequently suffer from handicaps. They are recalling the time when their son, Harrison Bergeron, was taken from his home by the handicapper general. It was an unhappy thought “but George and Hazel couldn't think about it very hard” (Vonnegut 1) due to the mental radio that separated the two from regular functioning emotions. Although Hazel was not affected by the handicap itself, it became a societal norm to act almost robot-like. This tendency provoked Hazel to the point where “there were tears on [her] cheeks, but she'd forgotten…what they were about” (1). The loss of emotion has taken the citizens’ entitlement to experience not only happiness and love but also sadness and grief. These are all traits that people need in order to operate like normal human beings. When George and Hazel witnessed the traumatic murder of their son on television, George automatically forgets due to his mental radio. Hazel, however, reacts to the frightening scene in front of her but forgets the occurrence just as fast. When asked by George what she was crying about the only thing she can recall is that the incident was “something real sad on television” (6). Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle once said, “The worst form of inequality is to try to make unequal things equal.” Kurt Vonnegut portrays Aristotle’s philosophy brilliantly in his short story “Harrison Bergeron.” The story depicts the American government in the future mandating physical handicaps in an attempt to make everyone equal. Vonnegut describes a world where no one is allowed to excel in the areas of intelligence, athletics, or beauty. Yet, the inequalities among the people shine even brighter. Vonnegut uses satire to explore the question of whether true equality can ever really exist.
In the year 2081, people were finally equal, and everyone was equal in every which way. No one could be more intelligent than the other or more attractive. All of the equality was due to the 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments to the Constitution. The reader may feel sorry for George Bergeron because of his tallness and his handicaps, Hazel’s normal intelligence, and the comments about their son Harrison.
Have you ever wondered what life would be if everyone was equal? Well, in the year 2081, the government made everyone equal with handicaps. In the story “Harrison Bergeron”, the government makes people with special talents or abilities wear handicaps. I agree with the claim,”Everyone was not truly equal in “Harrison Bergeron”. Some reasons why I believe that this statement wasn’t true is that the handicaps don’t take away your abilities, handicaps are not useful, and it is not fair for the people with abilities to wear handicaps. Everyone is truly equal in “Harrison Bergeron” because it made average people and below average people feel equal to the higher and better people.
Thus, since everybody was equal, this leads to the elimination of each citizen’s unique qualities. Another characteristics of a dystopian society in this film is how the leader is controlling the citizen’s thoughts and communication. For example, George's intelligence level was way above normal. Therefore, he is required by law to wear a mental handicap radio in his ear. This mental handicap radio would send out sharp noises every couple of seconds to distrust and stop his thinking which ensures that George is not taking advantage of his brain. The news reporter would be an example of how the leader is controlling its citizens communication. As seen in the film, the first time the news reporter appeared to make an announcement, he almost had the inability to speak, almost like he has a serious speech impediment. Moreover, another characteristic of a dystopian society would be a figurehead or leader that is worshipped by the citizens of the society. This can be justified when Hazel enviously told George that she “would make a good Handicapper General” and how it is “very interesting” to hear all the different
“Tears stood on the rims of his red eyes.” George hears a sharp painful buzzer go off in his headset handicap, which makes him inevitable cry and tremble. This noise is meant to break up George’s mind so he cannot think properly. This restriction enforced by the government allows the government to control it’s citizen’s thoughts. Although it brings pain and misery to George, it does prevent him from forming rebellious thoughts against the government and its system. George, as well as the people imprisoned by these handicaps are incapable of experiencing normal daily activities such as dancing, which is something the ballerinas have trouble doing in this story due to the handicaps. George’s reaction to the painful buzzer results in him to “turn white and tremble” which shows the level of misery the handicaps can impose on someone. Instead of equalizing the society, the handicaps mainly take away the people’s freedom and free will which causes their happiness to dwindle. “The narrator of the story Harrison Bergeron definitions’ of America’s equality begins not by positing a future equality as much as exposing the misunderstanding of it in the past and the present” (Hattenhauer). The story Harrison Bergeron has two meanings: too much equality and too much inequality. Too much equality is expressed through the Handicap General, Diana Glampers, as she wants everyone to be equal because she envies the talented and beautiful. However, “it is not fair to the productive, the risk taking, or the hard working, to deprive them of what they have produced, merely to make them equal to others who have worked less, taken less risk, and produced less” (Moore). This society would never work because “no one who has lived very long can think that all men are equal in physical, prowess, mental capacity, willingness to work or save, to assume leadership, to design or invent new products or processes, to get votes, to preach sermons, to play the violin, or even to make love” (Even Fingerprints Differ). In any society one should not have the power to make people equal for each “were endowed by our creator” (Moore). The performance sets up the scene with the female dancers dressed as prominent women throughout history such as Rosie the Riveter, Nillie Bly, Mother Teresa, Amelia Earhart, and Florence Nightingale. The women take turns in the spotlight, using their movements to tell their story and significance in history. The story of Amelia Earhart was told symbolically through the performer’s actions. The audience are introduced to Earhart’s love of flying and her aspirations to be a renown female pilot through the performer’s imitation as a graceful plane flying across the stage with glee. However, her story takes a dark turn when she embarks on a quest to prove herself as a capable pilot in spite of being a woman. We see her downfall when her character, as a plane, struggles to stay in flight and eventually tumbles and falls, exiting the stage soon after to show her mysterious disappearance during her quest. The performer playing as Earhart succeeded in portraying her story and her downfall. The dancer’s performance as Earhart was followed by another significant performance which was the dance of Mother Teresa, who took the spotlight with her reserved yet expressive dances. During her dance, Mother Teresa made a notable move where she wanders the stage and places a hand on each of the women in a caring way, like a mother would do to her child. This can be symbolized by light. Blanche hates to be seen by Mitch, her significant other, in the light because it exposes her true identity. Instead, she only plans to meet him at night or in dark places. Also, she covers the lone light in Stella and Stanley’s apartment with a Chinese paper lantern. After Blanche and Mitch get into a fight, Mitch rips off the lantern to see what Blanche really looks like. Blanche angrily replies that she’s sorry for wanting magic. In the play, Blanche states “I don’t want realism, I want magic! [..] Yes, yes, magic! I try to give that to people. I misrepresent things to them. I don’t tell the truth, I tell what ought to be truth. And if that is sinful, then let me be damned for it!”(Williams 117). Blanche wants to escape reality, but this only leads to her self-destruction. It is the men in her life and past experiences that is the main cause of her self - destruction. One of these being the death of her young love, Allen Grey. During their marriage, Blanche, attached to the hip to this man, walked in on him with another man. She then brought the incident up at a bad time; soon after, Allen took his own life, which I believe was the first step to this so called “self-destruction. Blanche could never forgive herself of this. This is the truth of her past, therefore,
