The Growing Presence of Women in Sports The sports industry is male-dominated and that affects the low numbers of women working in it. But, in recent years, more women have been hired for jobs despite gender bias. Even though some of these positions are temporary, these achievements are huge and show that the gender barrier in sports is starting to break (Roberts). This results from the advocacy for women in sports and their relentless pursuit of success. For young females aiming to have a career in sports, it is important to have role models that have already paved their way through the gender barrier in sports. In an article about Kim Ng, the first female GM in the MLB, Laura Armstrong writes that even though pursuing a career in sports as …show more content…
Likewise, when women who aspire to have a career in sports see their peers being their true self and “not trying to be guys”, then these women are shown that they can also succeed without having to change themselves in order to get hired for a job (Reiner). Young females are more inclined to pursue their goals if someone like them has shown that it is possible to do so. In addition to the determination of women, sports organizations can also make an impact with increased numbers of women in sports. Research shows “a key beyond making diverse hires will be for teams to create cultures that are psychologically safe for decision-makers such as GMs to have the latitude to grow” (Bell). Many women don’t apply for jobs in sports because the industry is male-dominated and they will face much discrimination. Yet, if organizations can create a safe place where women can prosper without feeling threatened, many more females will be working in sports. Additionally, these numbers would also increase if qualifications are the only consideration when choosing who to hire for a job …show more content…
In the past years, sports teams have organized programs whose purpose is to provide opportunities for women. An example of this is the “Next Shift” program organized by the Philadelphia Flyers’ that consists of girls and women shadowing female employees to expose them to different jobs during a normal hockey game (Reiner). This program gives aspiring females a chance to succeed by providing them with insight to the behind-the-scenes work that women do for a sports team so they can gain experience in the workforce and obtain networking opportunities. In this same article by Olivia Reiner, she wrote: “relationships can make a major difference in breaking into the industry, underscoring the importance of continuing a program like Next Shift.” Since relationships are so important in the process of getting a job in the sports industry, it is even more important that women have an opportunity to gain these relationships because they already have a disadvantage when it comes to hiring due to their gender. Therefore, this program will continue to give women resources to help them succeed in
Toxic masculinity in sports culture has created a restricted and harmful environment for LGBTQ+ athletes, contributing to homophobia, transphobia, and a lack of representation. However, increased visibility, representation, and support from athletes and activists are challenging these norms and promoting more inclusion and equity in sports. Toxic masculinity has been a common issue in sports culture, creating an environment that is often hostile and exclusionary towards LGBTQ+ individuals. Homophobia
The modern day understanding of lesbianism can best be described as nebulous. Although most know that a lesbian is a woman that loves other women, the public opinion surrounding lesbianism mainly consists of half-formed stereotypes and vague disapproval or begrudging acceptance. When considering the LGBT community, most people picture the gay male and neglect the rest of the acronym. There a multitude of reasons for this nebulous perception of the modern day lesbian, but in actuality, lesbian culture
History of Women in Sports For most of human history, athletic competition has been regarded as an exclusively masculine affair. Women weren't aloud to watch most sporting events let alone participate in them. Not till late 19th century did women really begin participating in sporting events. Although women were permitted to participate in many sports, relatively few showed interest, for a variety of social and psychological reasons that are still poorly understood. Title IX declares: "No person

Gender Roles and Stereotypes Explored in Judy Mann's The The Difference: Growing Up Female in America and Bernard Lefkowitz's Our Guys Gender stereotypes are common in the United States today, even though many men and women have been working hard to defeat it. The task is made difficult however, when society in general implants the idea of gender roles into the mind of a child. Two authors, Judy Mann of The Difference and Bernard Lefkowitz of Our Guys face the issue of gender roles and stereotypes
Guys are Not Great Communicators,” were the titles of his four short stories about how guys differ from men, and within these four short stories is where my curiosity for stereotypes arose. So after reading the Barry article I began to do some research on stereotype, and found a few interesting websites which lead me further into the world of stereotyping. As I did my search and read through some of the results I began to wonder why people stereotyped other people, which naturally led me to change
minorities and women are stereotyped and degraded. The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) recently released its 2013 sales, demographic and usage report for the computer and video game industry. “Numbers show that 58% of Americans play video games. Fifty-five percent of gamers are male while 45% of gamers are female.” These numbers should suggest a change in the look of gaming to support its wide range of gamers. Yet and still nothing is being done. I feel this is due to a lack of women and minorities
Dassler started the “Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik” out of his mother’s wash kitchen. His goal was to provide athletes with the best possible equipment. An athlete himself, Dassler understood their needs. On August 18, 1949, Adi Dassler registered his growing company as the “Adi Dassler adidas Sportschuhfabrik” and hired forty seven employees in Herzogenaurach, Germany. That same day, he registered a shoe that included the now famous Adidas 3-Stripes symbol. Over the next twenty years, the Adidas brand
It has been stated in each research source that hazing and particularly binge drinking is the most serious problem affecting social life, academic life, and health on college campuses today. The journal article pertaining to this issue, How Harvard’s College Alcohol Study Can Help Your Campus Design a Campaign Against Student Alcohol Abuse (CAS: Campus Alcohol Study for short), focuses more heavily on binge drinking and prevention than it does on the Greek system itself. In this coursework I intend to carry out secondary market research in order to decide how feasible it would be for Nike to launch a new range of sugar-free chewing gum. The reason for using secondary and not primary research is mainly because secondary research tends to be far cheaper to collect than primary research. It is also easier to
