Flannery O’ Conner’s short story the “Greenleaf” Mrs. May who owns a farm that was giving to her by husband after his death. She is a widow trying to keep this run down farm to provide for her family because her sons will not do the farm work. She had a helping hand around the farm Mr. Greenleaf. As we read the story we find out that Mrs. May is a brittle, cold women. She had two sons, Wesley and Scofield who still live at home, unmarried and are irresponsible. Wesley is an insurance salesman, and Socfield was in his thirties and is a teacher at a university. At some point you kind of feel sorry for her.
In the story you see how brittle and superficial she is. She keeps trying to make herself look young again. “For a second she waited…Green rubber curlers sprouted neatly from her forehead and her face beneath them was smooth as concrete with an egg white paste that drew the wrinkles out as she slept” (Conner 311). She knows that she will never become young again but keeps on wasting her time.
