Mr. Jay Gatsby, a man too obsessed with the past to see the present. Gatsby is a young man in his early thirties from North Dakota. It is here that he lived an impoverished childhood and dreamed of wealth and the sophisticated lifestyle. Gatsby obtained his dreams through organized crime and any way he could. Ultimately we see that his possessiveness with the lavish lifestyle is fueled continuously for his ever passionate love for Daisy Buchanon, a woman he met in 1917 in Louisiana before he departed for World War 1. When Gatsby met Daisy he immediately fell in love with her aura of luxury, so he lied about his past to seem as if he was worthy of her time and not just another poor kid from North Dakota. He understood Nick to be Daisy cousin and saw his long awaited opportunity finally present itself. Gatsby Uses a mutual friend of theirs to arrange for him and Daisy to "accidentally" run into each other at Nick 's house. When they do finally meet Gatsby breaks an old clock on Nicks mantle, representing Gatsby 's attempt to live in the past and his inability to change what the passing of time has done to his relationship with Daisy. This is how I believe Gatsby first enforces the theme that time is always passing us by, even if he refuses to see it. In chapter 5 Nick sees that Gatsby 's vision of daisy is much superior to the real daisy, he says "There must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy Tumbled Short of his dreams."(p.95) Although this is a sad way to se Gatsby 's dreams deteriorating it is a very important observation by nick. The idea that Gatsby has placed Daisy on this massive pedestal only ensures his disappointment. He sees Daisy as the goal to end all of his sadness and suffering, but someone who cares more about wealth and Luxury then the man could never be what Gatsby sees her …show more content…

It is too simple to say that green means go, but in all the complexity of Gatsby 's plans to win Daisy back, it is not wrong to see the green light as just what it is. Gatsby believes in the light, and that the light is a symbol for his never ending quest for Daisy 's affection. The green means go mentality is one held close to Gatsby 's heart. Even in death and after he had been shot through the heart, the green light still shined as bright as each day Gatsby 's peer across the lake from his dock. He does not say so specifically but it becomes clear to the reader that he is in a state of denial about his future with Daisy, and that the past will never repeat
