The Great Depression
The Great Depression is comparable to Lennie and George's life. I would like to give a comparison of George Milton and Lennie Small to the Great Depression. The time that this story took place was during the Great Depression. John Steinbeck captured the reality of this most difficult time.
During the Great Depression people needed to travel together to share chores and duties to make a living until something better came along. That is the way George and Lennie traveled. They traveled together to take care of each other but George took care of Lennie the most, because he was always getting in trouble. "You do bad things and I got to get you out." (Of Mice and Men p.11). During the Great Depression money was very scarce. You had to travel around to find a job in order to make money to survive. Lennie
and George were in that type of predicament. Keeping enough money until the next job was difficult because prices were rising during the Great Depression and you had to budget your money. During this depression most people worked on farms because after the stock market crashed people realized that the reason the stock market crashed was because farms were not producing enough goods. People started to work on farms more to help
everyone. Lennie and George worked for ranches and also in the fields.
"He's a good skinner. He can rassel grain bags, drive a cultivator. He can do
anything." (Of Mice and Men p.22).
If you really look closely, George and Lennie's way of life and the Great Depression have a good deal in common. George and Lennie were outcasts in life. George Milton was small in size and a very smart man compared to Lennie. He was actually only of average intelligence. Lennie Small was a large person and very retarded. Since Lennie was so retarded he did not grasp the things that were happening around him. For example, if
someone became upset about anything he would grab them and hold and squeeze until they stopped moving. Lennie would accidentally harm them and that is how he got inck smoke into the environment constantly. This disgusting smog stains buildings, covers trees, and hovers above many of our major city in large masses.
Automobiles also contain some fluids that can be deadly to us and our wildlife. We often hear of gasoline spills by tanker trucks or by ships, both of which are meant to supply our automobiles with fuel.
why Lennie and George Travel together and is not very understanding. Although you never find
Few countries have a warrior tradition as long and exciting as Japan. It is a tradition found in the Samurai, the loyal and self-sacrificing knight of ancient Japan. The Samurai is a valiant warrior who can both appreciate the beauty of nature in that of a rose blossom but will also kill or die for his master in an instant. This well-rounded warrior was the ruling class of Japan for almost seven hundred years. He fought for control of his country and to keep Japan free from outside influences. (Turnbull 1)
Lennie himself had problems such as mental illness which he suffered from causing him to do bad deeds. First in the beginning, George and Lennie was trying to escape weed because, Lennie killed a women from their. Lennie holds small and fragile things in his hand, and does not understand how weak and frail they are, which ends up hurting or killing them.”I like to put things with my fingers, sof’ things”(90). He doesn't have any understanding when he is hurting something when he squeezes it because, he is mentally challenged. The last thing that shows this is he killed Curley's wife as well around the end of the novel.
Although they had mental health facilities in the 1930s, there was no way George was sending Lennie to one. He barely could take care of himself, Let Alone be in some home suffering in an envi...
Great Depression was one of the most severe economic situation the world had ever seen. It all started during late 1929 and lasted till 1939. Although, the origin of depression was United Sattes but with US Economy being highly correlated with global economy, the ill efffects were seen in the whole world with high unemployment, low production and deflation. Overall it was the most severe depression ever faced by western industrialized world. Stock Market Crashes, Bank Failures and a lot more, left the governments ineffective and this lead the global economy to what we call today- ‘’Great Depression’’.(Rockoff). As for the cause and what lead to Great Depression, the issue is still in debate among eminent economists, but the crux provides evidence that the worst ever depression ever expereinced by Global Economy stemed from multiple causes which are as follows:
In Of Mice and Men, there are two main identifiable causes of George and Lennie’s conflict. The first one is that Lennie is not bright, so he causes harm without even meaning to. Lennie is like a hyper dog playing with a small kitten, even though he does not mean to hurt anyone, he still does sometimes. This is shown when he kills one of Slim’s pups (Steinbeck pg 62). The other cause of this conflict is that George and Lennie can not earn all of the money that they need. The farm that George has in
First, in John Steinbeck's, Of Mice and Men Lennie is a giant man with a mind of a child. He is a quite a pushover when it come to his partner George. George is always taking advantage of Lennie for his strength and mean mugging looks. George and Lennie move
George has been taking care of Lennie for a long time and he knows him very well. In the world that Lennie and George were brought up to live in, being strong is the only way to survive. This is difficult for a lot of people including Lennie. Even though Lennie is a big strong guy, he is not bright and has trouble dealing with his differences. Even George does not know what to do with Lennie. At the end of the story, George made a very hard decision that would affect his whole life and Lennie’s.
Ever since Lennie’s Aunt Clara died, George had to look after him because Lennie cannot look after himself (Steinbeck). Lennie accidentally scared a girl and he and George had to leave Weed, and they had to go get new jobs (Attell). George gets angry at Lennie for accidentally getting them in trouble and says he should leave and how easier his life would be without Lennie (Hart). He then tells Lennie that he did not mean what he said and would not leave him (Hart).
Lennie was not very smart and couldn't do much by himself. He had to be told what to do or he wouldn't do anything at all. He fits all the profiles for a retarded person. He doesn't have any self-control. When he starts to panic he gets out of control and even kills Curly's wife because she starts to scream. Lennie loves animals and can't stop talking about them. He always says that when they get their own place that he wants lots of rabbits, his favorite animal. To him George is like his father figure, since Lennie never really had any parents. He is easily amused and panics quickly.
But economically, Roosevelt and his “brains trust” had no idea what they were doing. They attempted one failed intervention after another. The Great Depression was a disaster, and sadly an avoidable one.” (Edwards, 2005)
Imagine not being able to control yourself while you have no support from others. Well, in the 1930s, people that couldn’t control themselves were mistreated. They treated patients in the 1930s with inhuman treatments and weren't fully aware of the side effects. Lennie, who is one of the main characters in the novel of Mice and Men could have had a much harder life if he wouldn’t have had his best friend George taking care of him. Although, Lennie had an underdeveloped mind and always gets himself in situations that get him into trouble, George still stayed with him. Lennie is very lucky that George did decided to end his misery, because he got to live his life freely and he doesn’t have to be treated differently anymore.

Because Lennie is bright as a dim light bulb, he has to listen to George no matter what he says or else, Lennie might get into bigger problems than he is now. Lennie goes to the ranch to work with George since they are poor during The Great Depression. He might be poor and clueless, but he has big dreams for the future. Lennie dreams of always being with George no matter what, so he can always guide him to do the right thing in any situation since Lennie is not capable of processing things quickly due to his mental handicap. And Lennie's other dream is to tend rabbits he can only tend those rabbits if he is responsible and doesn't get into any trouble they(George and Lennie) work on the ranch:"’[George]O.K. Someday—we're gonna get the jack together and we're gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an' a cow and some pigs and—’ ‘[Lennie]An' have rabbits’(page 14). Finally, Lennie's other dream is to be equal to George, most of the time Lennie has to be quite while George does the important stuff, Lennie just wants to be involved with the important things. Lennie just wants to be involved with the others and not be left out just like always. He wants to be useful as the others and be able to make a difference by

There are actually many types of weddings like Gypsies, Indian, and Japanese etc. All of these weddings are different and unique, but the one that is the most vibrant and traditional is an Indian wedding. Indian weddings stand out because they have all these new and fun moments and parts to the wedding.
